Yes, your house can be resumed but every state in Australia and the Commonwealth can resume your land under just terms. Canberra is exactly the same.

Did you know that when we buy an IP here, we get the stamp duty back as part of the normal deductions as stamp duty apparently is incompatible with leasehold. (I havent explained if very well but that is, in essence, what happens)
 
If people are spending $500,000+ on a property they should know what property rights they have. Even if the government renews your lease it does not mean that it is equivalent to freehold. If they decide to build a new freeway/train line through your property you have less recourse/compensation than someone who has freehold on the land.
