what is the difference between sewer drain and stormwater drain?

Hi, guys,

what are the differences between sewer drain and stormwater drain?

please shed some light.

Sewer drain carries effluent and is connected to the likes of all the bathroom wastes the various laundry wastes and the kitchen sink. The flow from this system will go to a sewerage plant and be treated before discharge into the environment.

The stormwater drain is connected to the downpipes and any other outside water runoff point.

the sewer drain will be either Terracotta (known to plumbers as CLAY ) or 100mm pvc pipe.
A storm drain will be plain cement/concrete , or if new 90mm pvc pipe .

Hi craigb

This could vary from state to state/territory.

Melbournes residential- sewers are generally Terracotta(old), 100mm PVC(new), sometimes cast iron.
- storm water drains are generally Terracotta(old),
100mmPVC(new) with concrete under footpath /nature strip.

"this is an aprils fools joke surely?"

haha, not really a April Fools. The Sewer can be easily seen from diagram. But stormdain is not easily found on the DP. any thought how to find the Stormdrain in the DP?

Generally the stormwater drainage system won't be on any of your plans unless you are having the builder do the install. Most builders will only provide downpipes on the house and you have to arrange your subsurface stormwater runoff to street front either by doing it yourself or have a plumber or handyhumper come and do it.

If you are talking a unit complex or the like, then you may see a small 'x' in a box which will tell you there is a drain grill in paved or concreted driveway.

Strata properties may have a drawing available if you are buying in; more likely a mud map than a plan.

Attached is a stormwater plan of a dev I am doing in SA; probably won't help you but have a squiz anyway.

Ian.

Either way it is illegal to connect the wrong outlet to the wrong pipe, yet many DIYers do. Some Councils will do the rounds with a smoke generater to test if this has occurred.

Very very naughty to run the stormwater to the sewer. Our council letterboxed everyone after the latest rains complaining their underground pumping hoozits couldn't keep up with it all. Not surprising, it rained for a week non-stop. Our backyard (and the house) started to fill up with frogs, of all things. I'm used to ants and spiders and millipedes and earwigs wandering around inside, maybe the occasional gecko, but frogs? Damn rain.

You NEED the sewer connected on a new house fyi, but not the stormwater. Our builder has given us helpful plans on how we should do it, but they just provide the holes in the gutter and leave it up to us to stick pipes in the holes and actually run the water to tanks/street.
