Why do sales people earn more than Engineers ?

From: Rolf Latham

Hi all

This was sent to me by one of my friendly Bank Business Development Managers

Im gonna be filthy stinking rich :eek:)

Dilbert's Theorem on Salary states:
Engineers, Teachers, Programmers and Scientists can never earn as much
salary as business executives and sales people.

This theorem can now be supported by a mathematical equation based on the
following three postulates:

Postulate 1: Knowledge is Power (Knowledge = Power)
Postulate 2: Time is Money (Time = Money)
Postulate 3: (as every Physics student knows): Power = Work / Time

It therefore follows: Knowledge = Work / Time
and since Time = Money,
we have: Knowledge = Work / Money

Solving for money, we get: Money = Work / Knowledge

Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity, regardless
of the amount of work done.

Conclusion: The Less You Know, the More you Make

Ta

Working in the IT industry, I can appreciate the post above as it is the people skills and NOT the technical skills that drive income.

The problem with this mathematical model is as follows:

We know that:
IGNORANCE = BLISS

and my Mum always says that money does not equal happiness, thus money is inversely proportional to happiness:
MONEY = 1 / HAPPINESS

Also:
HAPPINESS = BLISS

Therefore:
MONEY = 1 / BLISS

and
MONEY = 1 / IGNORANCE

Finally, knowledge is the inverse of ignorance
KNOWLEDGE = 1 / IGNORANCE

Thus
decrease KNOWLEDGE -> increase IGNORANCE

and
as IGNORANCE approaches infinity, MONEY approaches zero.

Hi DB,

Alas, you're perpetuating the myth that money doesnt make you hapy, as when
my wallet is full of lovingly folded $100 notes and I'm off shopping for
power tools, books and holidays I'm _very_ happy :)

Regards,

Duncan.

So Money = Knowledge?

So Work isn't required... as in Rolf's equation.

I like the sound of that!!

as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity : CORRECT

as IGNORANCE approaches infinity, MONEY approaches zero : WRONG

Although money does not equal happiness, the assumption of HAPPINESS = 1 / MONEY is wrong.
The correct formula is:
HAPPINESS = MONEY + HEALTH + RELATIONSHIPS + ... (feel free to add extra terms).

Employed by the company Scott Adams was inspired by, let me assure you that Dilbert rules.

HAPPINESS = ATTITUDE
Attitude comes from the mind and the stronger you make yourself mentally =through learning and experience the more happiness you will experience. =Wealth, health etc are physical symptoms of happiness, but they can be =symptoms of other things as well.

When you see someone who is really rich or really fit or really good =looking etc etc this does not mean they are 'happy'. People striving =to create wealth often think they are creating happiness. The journey is =where you will get 'happiness' not the actual wealth. Happiness is =enjoying experience of life's journey.
