Hi all,

Is anybody noticing the stealthy evolution of "our ABC" into what I have now termed "your BBC"?

Our 'supposed' national broadcaster, the ABC, seems to air an enormous amount of BBC content and it appears to multiplying like bacteria. There is no doubt that it is often quality programming but I still think its a load of old bollocks.

What ever happened to local content? I thought Kevin 07 or Peter Pine Gap Head (Minister for shiney heads and sometimes the environment) might have something to say.

ummm....

ABC has always traditionally screened alot of BBC programing, along with other foreign programs. I grew up watching shows like DrWho, various childrens cartoons and shows - like the adventures of narnia (BBC), gumby, etc.

Hi RRat,

I should qualify, I am referring to English programming in general, not specifically the BBC. Sorry about that.

Tonight and tomorrow nights ABC1 programming consists approximately 6.5 hours of english programs within our prime time viewing period. That is a lot.
With a country as diverse as ours there exists many opportunities to produce local quality content across all genre. I believe it is such a shame we are not doing that and spending our money on purchasing so much English drama as filler.

I think British content is the same as always, just the quality is not what it was, but give me Aunty over the US (and Australian-US cloned) junk any day.

maybe i'm getting old, but finding sbs a better quality of view than abc nowadays.

I'm not really fussed that they show a high content of foreign programs.

What really pi$$e$ me off is that they should have a fair and balanced view of all things political. The ABC is loaded with biased lefties, which is not a problem if they are self funded..

But we taxpayer pay for this. We deserve better.

How do you know the religion of the newsreader ? Is there a sign hanging around their neck or can you can tell from looking at them ? Not that their religion is of any relevance to the news (unlike their politics as others have suggested)

turban, tilaka, taqiyah, and hijab are all common signs of dedicated religiosity amongst first gen migrants. despite some thinking they are signs of race.

it'd be discriminatory if the ABC only employed newsreaders and weatherpersons who concealed their religion.....especially considering they employ socialists who don't conceal their politics.

Not that their religion is of any relevance to the news (unlike their politics as others have suggested)

glad you believe religion is irrelevant to the news (or weather). then there's no good reason the ABC shouldn't have a hijab veiled Muslim weathergirl and a turban wearing Sikh newsreader....as long as their politics align with the ABC's.

Informative, but my point was the newsreaders don't put up signs. The absence of a hijab does not state ones religion any more than the absence of a crucifix.

The politics line was tongue in check - I just watch their news as it's better than any of the commercial stations. If one believes that religion or politics have influenced the ABC's news, I’m sure that the average ABC view has an informed position better than the average 7/9/10 punter and can more likely discern any bias. Put another way, it may not be the perfect, but it’s less worse than the others.
