Are we running out of oil?

Yup :)

But it certainly wasn't impossible to drill through anyway - the Russians managed it in the 1960s.

...

That is why the Russians are drilling in Antarctic - practice makes perfect.

The Russians have been drilling in Antarctica.

It is a lot easier to get to than the moon.

Ah but they're not drilling oil and gas wells - just a hole to a lake.

There's quite a difference in the scale of difficulty - particularly when it comes to extraction and transport.

And notice how much it has cost. You need to have good probabilities of discovering very large reservoirs before it's a commercial proposition.

Or improved drilling techniques.

As I said, it's an engineering problem and it will be solved, but the return needs to be there (or the strategic imperitive due to lack of other secure supply).

The antarctic treaty will last a while longer yet (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1665212/posts , http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/all-eyes-on-the-last-wilderness/2006/07/16/1152988415153.html).
