A FARMER had to convince police he had not been drinking when he reported finding a 180kg seal wandering with his horses in a paddock yesterday.
The fact the seal was 400m from water added to the bizarre call.
"He rang us up and basically tried to ensure he hadn't been drinking," Sergeant Pat Lee, of the Tasmanian Police, said.
"He was just concerned for the welfare of the seal."
The farmer, who lives in Cambridge, east of Hobart, discovered the seal with his horses.
Department of Primary Industries spokesman Warwick Brennan said the fur seal was returned to the water.
He said it was not uncommon for seals to rest on land.
