Roy Morgan: Unemployment at record high 4Q14

Oldest lad was the proverbial headache at school. Barely 2 years highschool and then lived on the streets for 3 years. Managed to get him into a mechanics apprenticeship at Hunter Holden in Sydney. He lasted 2 1/2 years before pulling the pin. $6.30/hr starting wage and by the time he dumped it...

Absolutely. Higher education gives you options that don't have income ceilings. You can be a CEO if you have the drive and stamina or push a broom if you wish. But without higher education your only option out of income limitation is self employment and the failure rate is high 80%+. Success...

I sympathise. It's a catch 22 in many ways. It's impossible at 16 to know what you are going to like or dislike in terms of a career yet you have to make choices about which direction to go. Difficulties increase the more specialised your education is. Then when you graduate you find the...

I have a young niece who starts her 4th year at high school this year. This year is a critical year in that outcomes determine access to uni. She had no intention of going to uni because her impression was that it was expensive and would leave her with a large debt. She has little understanding...

Billy Mitchell's blog supports your view You might find this interesting. Are male participation rates declining because female labour is more competitively priced? The top graph suggests that female participation has peaked. Their position has definitely improved albeit in a...

Wrong way of looking at it. The participation rate is a more realistic way of looking at employment and more difficult to fudge. The trend isn't positive with a steady decline since 2010/11. The tail in the graph is an optimistic projection given the circumstances.

That's raw data not an analysis and sample size is not a measure of broadness or depth. That goes more to the questions asked and the quality of collection. ABS as mentioned has been taken to task on this. I'm neither pro nor anti either system. They both have their shortcomings and...

Hardly. A poorly written and researched piece. The problem with so called job adverts is that it's not correlated to actual unemployed numbers. In Aug 14 there were 147,200 job vacancies though unemployment totalled 735,500 people. So a small blip in job vacancy ads makes little or no...

You obviously didn't read the whole page or if you did you failed to understand it. RM describes their system and compares it to the limitations of ABS's model. They make a case for better data collection from the ABS which is not unreasonable. 2014 ABS were put on the mat publicly for shoddy...

The trouble with these/those is only the insiders make money. If you're on the outside you need big positions and big leverage but that's like gambling blindfolded and not knowing what the stakes are. Derivatives were invented by the Devil I'm sure of it.

It won't matter. There isn't a political party worth 2 bob at the moment and if there was they'd have their work cut out trying to sort the current mess out.

I neglected to provide the reference da! http://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2015/01/roy-morgan-unemployment-at-record-high/ I tend to take all data with a grain of salt. Everyone has an agenda. The govt invariably understates the data in this area and has strong incentives to model...

RM provides a broader and deeper analysis of employment data than ABS stats. I would use neither individually but both to confirm (given their limitations and models) any assumptions I might have. If you don't care and choose to use a single source for your prefered knowledge then you show...

Wishful thinking at best. Watch crashing oil prices crush the AU energy sector. Another cliff for CAPEX to fall off just when it wasn't looking too bad. WA and QLD will be in a world of hurt by the end of 2015 is my guess.

Roy Morgan: Unemployment at record high 4Q14

Roy Morgan tend to have a much better handle on employment/unemployment than official ABS stats would have us believe. If you look at the trend since 08 things in the employment sector have been steadily deteriorating even as AU supposedly saw some of its greatest boom years. Worse is the...
