Anyone going to the US or Mexico? Be careful swine flu has spread - pandemic risk

If the world economic problems were not enough, we now have to worry about our health as well.
Check this 1 out.

A new swine flu strain that has killed as many as 68 people and sickened more than 1,000 across Mexico has "pandemic potential," the World Health Organization chief said Saturday, and it may be too late to contain the sudden outbreak.

The disease has already reached Texas and California, and with 24 new suspected cases reported Saturday in Mexico City alone, schools were closed and all public events suspended in the capital until further notice — including more than 500 concerts and other gatherings in the metropolis of 20 million.

A hot line fielded 2,366 calls in its first hours from frightened city residents who suspected they might have the disease. Soldiers and health workers handed out masks at subway stops, and hospitals dealt with crowds of people seeking help.

The World Health Organization's director-general, Margaret Chan, said the outbreak of the never-before-seen virus is a very serious situation and has "pandemic potential." But she said it is still too early to tell if it would become a worldwide outbreak.

It has been my belief that a terrorist attack or flu out break could strike during the long recovery period, worsening this situation.

Swine flu: what you need to know

Swine flu: what you need to know from New Scientist

Should I worry about this flu?

That depends on two things: how severe the flu is, and how far it spreads. Its severity is still unknown. Those who died in Mexico were young adults who don't often die of flu, so we know this virus can be serious. But it isn't always bad: the cases picked up in the US were mild.

......

What should I do to prepare for a pandemic?

.... Do all the things you might do to prepare for any disaster. Stockpile canned and dried food and water, a little cash, and your family's essential medicines, as disruptions in supply might happen in a bad pandemic, and make sure you have a crank- or battery-operated radio and lights and spare batteries.

My relative emailed me about this (who runs a cluster of 5-6 hospitals in an overseas country): saying the present swine virus is H1N1. If you're really worried, try to get a flu shot that protects against H1N1.
Also suggests reading WHO outbreak news everyday as things are changing fast.

I think half the people on this forum have already done this. Don't forget to stock pile some tradeable quantities of gold
