But, alcohol is a bit more readily available (apparently), and legal, and you don't have as many folks committing robberies and murders etc to get money to buy the slab of VB, or attacking the Para's when they try to save them from an O/D, etc.

Seems pretty clear to me that legalising drugs not only drops crime rates but increases Govt.Coffers

Some light reading for you

Legalise drugs and dropping crime rates

Also when was the last time you heard of pot smoking stoners getting in punchups with anyone? (harder drugs I am definitely against)
In comparison the media would have us believe your VB (alcohol) drinking examples seem to be getting into blues and beating their wives quite regularly.

Now, I dont smoke pot or take illegal drugs at all and I do drink alcohol and don't go beating anyone up but rest assured, if pot was legalised and I didnt have to do some dodgy back alley deal with fear of being arrested, I would quite possibly give the booze away and partake in the more calming herb.

Back in in the 30s the Dutch government held a census which also nominated religion in one of the answers.
Roll forward to 1941 and the Nazis are in town. Guess what government information about legitimate activities (ie religion) was used to round up the Jews and kill them?

I personally think that anyone who uses the old "If you have got nothing to hide what are you worried about?" line is a mindless drone suitable for clearing minefields. Anyone who advocates Government collection of private info without independent pro active oversight and accountability should be sent into the minefields to clean up what's left of the drones.

Well said and totally agree

My issue with this whole terrorist/muslim issue is with tarring all muslims with the "terrorist" brush and asking why they don't fix the problem.
I am only 46 but I remember a little group called the IRA. They were rather partial to bombing, knee-capping, torture etc.
How would Catholics feel if they were only referred to in the context of the IRA?
How many Catholics tried to stop the IRA?
How many stood up and condemned the IRA, vehemently and repeatedly?
...........
I bet the silence was deafening.

ISIS has twisted the "Koran" simply to meet their own agenda. Why have they needed to do this? Is it because they have no desire to live in a peaceful world?
Unfortunately, this has far reaching effects.

On that Logic- Just go straight to the poppy seed and take heroin, I've never seen an agro heroin user either

Speaking to some mental health staff, pot isn't an innocent drug

Oh I dont know, I'm sure if I looked I could find many instances of Heroin addicts committing violent crime to support their habit

I never said it was but it is quite possibly more innocent than alcohol and tobacco.

Everyone calls ISIS terrorists....which is right they are a bunch of scum but....if you really think about it there are countries who sponser these scum they are Saudia arabia, qatar & turkey.

What is being done against those countries that are funding these scums? Nothing.

C'mon, alcohol is responsible for far more crime and death than other drug.
It is the most devastating drug of the lot by a long way, especially the harder drug versions like spirits.

Protecting yourself (from invasion) is important I suppose.

We are fortunate that we are a looong way away from most of the main players. The closer northern neighbors might be a worry - those Countries are over-populating at a massive rate of knots, so we might have some concern

But to use that as a reason to add huge amounts of more humans to our shores is ridiculous.

The coastline is vast - too vast - to patrol with numbers of heads....and they would need to be militarily trained heads at that.

The last thing this planet (and this Country) needs is more frickin' humans; full stop.

Do we really want a Country that is as disgustingly over-populated as many of the other Countries we have now?

Here's an idea then; how about from today onwards, we only allow immigrants into Aus who will be military trained, spend the rest of their lives living up in FNQ, NT and Northern W.A their whole lives, on full alert and on patrols for the impending invasion through those areas...

But seriously; if push comes to shove and there is a "northern invasion" (or any other type - air invasion etc) I seriously hope the newer arrivals will stand and fight for their newly adopted home.

Sorry; it's an insane idea to simply add more cannon fodder in the hope of protection, and unless we are militarily superior via weaponry rather than cannon fodder; we will lose.

In the next 100 years China and India (and frickin' others too) will double their own populations, so even if we start adding more heads right now, we will still be so overwhelmingly under-manned it will be farcical.

the point is that its not about the quantity of human flesh, it's the size of the economy - productive capacity and budget

Um; it's a bit hard not to when not every - but almost every - instance we hear about of these insane Terrorist acts is perpetrated by some faction of a Muslim religion.

I haven't heard of too many IMD's and head-hack-offs by the Hindus or the Methodists lately....

Sorry; but these folks need to get their own house in order, or others will have to.
That's like saying those flogs from the Westboro Baptist Church epitomise the behaviour of all Christians. I agree (and have plenty of access to data) about a lot of what is being done in the name of Islam, and it's horrific, but I do understand their concerns about being unilaterally targeted.

That is soo not a comparison it's laughable.

Most of the really bad sport behaviour is not perpetrated here in Aus.

Drunken yobbos at the footy and cricket, and a bunch of knuckleheads at the soccer, and the odd "ugly parent" in the grandstands.

In most instances; there are cops at the grounds and the fools are either ejected or arrested.

No head-hacking in sight... so far.

We've already discussed the other ugly "one-punch' issue. Not good either, but as a comparison to blowing up folks and head-hacking?...

My point (which was obviously not clear) is how involved do you get when you're witness to some of the terrible behaviours I've seen perpetrated in Australia by sports fans? I've seen blatant racism and assaults (mostly outside the grounds where they feel the consequences are less likely), and mostly I've seen plenty of people standing around letting it happen. So how do you expect the Muslim community to intervene, except for the steps they're already trying to take to prevent the radicalisation of their youth? Genuine question, not rhetoric. I'm an atheist for a very good reason.

Might I put it to you that the reason why this sort of transition has occurred is because the cops are caned so badly by the public and media these days, that they've had to move with the times.

[snip]

So, come on boys! Let's gear up for the worst case scenario (because we frickin' have to - or possibly die at work), but let's soften the visual stance by stamping "rescue" on the tank, so the whining victim public can handle the look . ;)

Sad but true.

wonder what it will take to radicalise the Christians? holy attacks can't go unresponded indefinitely?

the weakness lies in the placidity though - this thread is a laugh in itself - some bloke beheading people is being likened to a drunk driver. LOL...someone slap me please, I must be in lala land

I won't be at all surprised if similar cases don't surface in both the UK and other Western countries. Actually, I don't think it's a matter of 'if' but 'when'.

This comment may be deleted, but the truth is that such practices are not uncommon in Pakistan, it is an endemic cultural problem.

I can see relations between Muslims and non-Muslims deteriorating drastically in countries like the UK and Australia. It's obvious that there is a lot of Islamophobic sentiment at the moment and it's also obvious that at least a certain segment of the Muslim population has nothing but contempt for non-Muslims. Revelations like this will only fuel the divide.

I don't see us collectively holding hands and singing Kumbaya My Lord any time soon.

That is disturbing to say the least. Terrible to think this goes on in the 21st Century. It seems we haven't evolved much as a species at all.

Yes, it's especially bad in places like Mexico where the police can be the criminals and politicians and business leaders can be the perpetrators.

I read an article on the weekend about an investigative journalist visiting Australia at the moment for the Festival of Dangerous Ideas.

Quote:
The revelations in Demons of Eden not only resulted in a life sentence for multimillionaire Canc?n hotelier Jean Succar Kuri, who ran a child pornography and sexual abuse racket, but also damaging publicity for the network of wealthy businessmen and ambitious public officials who tried to shield him. Some of the most damning evidence came from a young woman who had been abused by the hotelier as an eight-year-old; as many as 100 more girls were abused by him, including one who taped him boasting that his "vice" was to have sex with four-year-old girls.
