I have been reading a fair bit on conspiracy theories lately, after watching "Empire of the City" video.... interesting video on Illuminati etc.
I'm a bit confused though, repeatedly these types of NWO theories talk about a new "Socialist" government, one world currency, small group of people running the world and enslaving the rest of us etc. I don't believe everything I read, but I can see how there is something to what they say (eg. Empire of the city predicts world economic collapse.... easy to see how in the present climate we might move toward a single large bank to facilitate liquidity, saving the world economy but "fulfilling the evil bankster's plan to control the worlds money supply etc.".
Now what confuses me is that they describe the coming order as socialist.
To me, what most of these theories talk about is autocratic, technocratic, meritocratic, heriarchical, feudal, capitalistic and lots of other things which aren't necessarily desirable for the average punter, but not necessarily socialistic. Indeed, the main socialistic aspect would be any effort by the "big government" in providing for the people.
Granted such a system might involve lots of waiting in queues and a real loss of independance etc, but I wonder whether the use of this term is as a Code Word for "bad" for its predominantly American audience. I know as an Australian I'm glad to have many of our socialist institutions like health care and pension support, art grants and national parks.
It seems a key aspect of the American psyche that many oppose "big government", anything which is beyond the individual which controls or provides services or demands taxes. It strikes me that large capitalistic institutions are at least as menacing as government ones...... look how we have been raped by banks with fees etc.
Obviously conspiracy theories talk about "powers" that are bigger tahn banks and companies, and are not accountable in the way elected officials or companies are. I can see the reason for concern.
Just wondering what others think of this heavy use of the term "socialist".
If anyone has watched or watches the "Empire of the City" video, I would be interested in your opinion of the agenda/political position of the producers. Interesting viewing.
