Council raises commercial rates by 54%

Rates hike stings
JULY 4: A Manly businessman has been caught in the middle of a slanging match between council adversaries over soaring commercial rates.

Figures obtained by the Wynnum Herald show former Manly newsagent Bob Hicks will face a lift in his commercial rates bill of 54 per cent for a property he owns in Cambridge Pde, part of which is rented to professional photographer Julian Star.

The Herald also understands there will be double-digit rises for commercial properties in nine other suburbs, including Wakerley (up by 36.71 per cent), Wynnum West (25.69 per cent) and Hemmant (20.22 per cent).

This will mean annual rises of up to $3712.50.
