Earthquake Damage

So the bill for damage to our house in Christchurch is... $519,000.

The majority of it is land subsidence. We are on a hill overlooking Christchurch. The side of an extinct volcano funny enough! Not so sure it is extinct now...

So they need to lift out house and redo the foundaitions plus retaining walls, driveway and paths.

They are also redoing everything inside - repainting, re-carpeting, repainting inside and outside, refixing kitchen cabinets and fittings to walls... the list is endless.

I wonder why they don't just rebuild.

And they won't even start any of that until the aftershocks subside which could be years away. It is such an uncertain time for them over there... hard to imagine.

Wow!!!

I'm assuming it is not liveable. What happens to the rent you are missing out on? Does the insurance cover this?

We couldn't manage to pay the mortgage with no rent coming in for a long time.

Surprisingly it is deemed safe for living (it is tenanted) as most of it is land subsidence, not property damage. The chimney had to come down and one end of the deck is sloping down a bit but that is all so far. It is a lot of cosmetic stuff but mostly land issues.
