Help - oil on carpet and polished floor

Help please .

I have rellies staying in one of my houses temporarily. They have managed to spill the contents of a fragrance diffuser on my beautiful hall runner from Dubai and the polyurethane-coated baltic boards beneath. The fragrance diffuser is the kind you can buy at Myers, containing lemongrass oil and alcohol.

They were slow to lift the carpet and the oil has attacked the polyurethane, affecting an A4 sized area. I suggested that they immediately "neutralise" the substance on the floor with warm water and a bit of dishwashing liquid. I now feel I should have suggested white vinegar a la Shannon Lush - and will do so if I don't get any prompt replies from the gurus here.

Shannon's a bit quiet on the subject but does suggest dishwashing liquid to get oil out of carpet. I'm more concerned about the floorboards right now.

Hope someone can help :p.

cheers
