Holiday Suggestions

Hi mikezen,
Please give us a run down on why Egypt is your no.1

Thanks.

Been a few years since I have been there, it was the first Middle East country I had been to, so it made a long lasting impression

Cairo reminds me somewhat of Bangkok with all the noise and chaos but as you leave the city and start to experience the dessert, tombs and Nile, the experience becomes more surreal and intoxicating as there is nothing else quite like it.

The history captured and buried beneaths Egypt's barren landscape is invigorating and the drawings and tombs are as mesmerising as you could believe..seeing how us humans thought and lived all these thousands of years ago by seeing this physical proof so up close and personal is really something.

You can hire and sail down the Nile in a felucca boat and sleep under the stars and in the middle of it all, take some time out in a 5 star resort at the banks of the river that won't cost the earth either.. Because Egypt is Cheap!!

Police convoys (lots of guys with automatic weapons) will escort you across the desert to each destination as well as on trains which may be quite intimidating for some people but it's all part of the experience

On the other side of Egypt is the Red Sea, where you can find peaceful small diving villages( the diving is world class btw) and even if you don't dive you can ride a camel down to the beach and snorkel amongst thousands of fish or just get on it at any of the beach side bars if you want to party ( Dahab is my favourite spot)

I don't know what the stability of the country is like atm but it's defiantly somewhere I would want to go back to regardless. I obviously strongly recommended t to anyone who wants something a bit different

Travel agents set up tours with the whole packaging, would be worth pursuing as it would be cheaper and you would see more

Thanks very much for that mikezen. Sounds like you had a real eye opening adventure. With issues occurring in nearby countries it may be a little unstable at present. First experiences are so impressionable.

Just returned from Fiji. 28 degrees clear water warm ocean

I like Fiji.

Before we had kids I dismissed it altogether - too touristy, etc. But now it's great - those kids clubs and babysitters allow mum and dad to have a bit of a break too :)

Cheers

Jamie

I have a lot of friends from Egypt from when I worked there a for a bit. Egypt is as safe as ever. The issues in Gaza are isolated to Gaza.

I will second Mikezen. I like Egypt. Lots to do and the history is simply mind boggling. If you go don't miss the national museum.

As for the diving both Dahab and Sharm are very special. Great corals, deep water, some nice wrecks - though it can get busy.
The blue hole is something else all together.

Love to go but cannot get any travel insurance. Have things changed?

I believe you can get insurance from overseas based companies as they go by the travel advisories of the country they're located in. The UK has warnings against less countries than we do. You'd need to do a bit of research to make sure you'd be covered though as not all policies cover residents of other countries

We have enjoyed Fiji to Jamie on a couple of occasions. Native Fijians very friendly. I feel we might have a hard time getting our kids into "Kids Club" as they are 28, 26 and 24. But hey, we can always try. Haha!

Have both read and heard that the diving in the area is first rate. Very appealing to us. A good point you make also about Gaza. You know you might be costing me more money now as my wife is very interested in this region. I feel that the historical value would be a bonus as well.
At this stage it's Montenegro, Egypt.

Thanks.

I've been to Fiji on two occasions -

Stayed at Naviti Resort and The Fijian Resort (both on the Coral Coast) and both excellent with loads to do and lots of kids programs etc.

Stayed at Castaway Island and Matamanoa Island up north near the Yasawa Island group -
Castaway is family orientated, but small island.
Matamanoa is couples only. Small, relaxed; not a lot to do.

Finally; The Blue Lagoon Cruise (3 day). Fantastic experience and they move around a lot. Not ideal for kids though.

All the Coral Coast resorts are the better pics for mainland and kid-friendly.

Suva - avoid it; terrible.
Nandi - same.

Hi Bayview,
We to have stayed at "The Fijian Resort". Found it to be great value for money, extremely friendly and tourist pro-active. Also enjoyed the diving from here and the meals, oh and the odd Fiji Bitter!

We always had a particular hol idea, tropical, sight seeing a must etc. but 2 years ago (June/July) hols we booked a hol with go2africa. Best holiday ever. South Africa. We stayed 7 days at the lost palace (4 would have been plenty )
Then madikwe lodges (reserve) amazing, should have stayed longer and also the elephant camp in victoria falls.
It was quite cold morning and evening (by Brissy standards) but warmed up beautifully in the day, it was the most amazing hol ever, quiet, lots of walking (can do bush walks while looking for the big 5 if all adults) but it is the only hol everyone of us want to repeat. Can get night life if you want it as well as casinos and can pick a different location for part of the trip to include water sports.

Just back from uk/ireland/France, high season/hectic far too many people for me! (Was visiting family in Ireland so added in the other locations to make it a family hol.)
