Irish Vernacular, or how to build a house for ?25,000

I've just been doing a bit of browsing on building houses without wet trades, and I stumbled across the Irish Vernacular website, which is about a place built for ?25,000 (about $37,000).

Dominic Stevens, the architect, describes the motivation for the project thus:

I found myself without a lot of money and urgently requiring somewhere to live. I had experience of self-building and many years as an architect of building homes for people who had tight budgets and high aspirations as to what a house can be. I sat down and designed for myself what was, as small and simple a three bedroom house as seemed possible.

Invisible Studio, a practice run by the architect Piers Taylor, built the Caretaker's House on similar principles, whilst aiming for Passivhaus standards.

great house and something like this would do me.

Imagine how much financially better off people would be if they stopped constructing big wasteful houses.
