Kurnell-Caltex to end refinery operations in 2014

I like Kurnell in Sydney but was always put off by the smell from the refinery when the wind blew from a certain direction (from south).

The positives I see are large blocks near or adjacent to a sandy beach (Silver Beach) on the south of Botany Bay. Good fishing. Good access to walks. Great place for catamarans and boating. Picturesque. Not a ridiculous distance away from Sydney.

The big downfall was always the pollution from the refinery. Aircraft noise might be another but am not as concerned about this.

For someone who likes natural surrounds on Sydney's doorstep this article would be good news:-

Caltex Australia Limited (ASX:CTX) has confirmed the closure of its Kurnell refinery in New South Wales, with a scheduled end of operations date in the second half of 2014.

The oil refiner says it has decided to proceed with the Kurnell closure and conversion following a consultation period.

The move comes on the back of a year-long company review prompted a decision by Caltex to restructure its supply chain, with a major focus on refineries.

The decision will see the loss of at least 330 jobs, however Kurnell is set to be converted into an import facility for transport fuel.

Caltex posted a first half net profit of $167.3 million.
