Letter From ATO

job was to send out the coefficients each year to a user base of a couple of thousand. Not sure why, but more often than not, they would release them at the last possible minute

Sounds a lot like the major policies of a political party....

Election on the Saturday....no worries, we'll release everything for you to scrutinise all the details on late Thursday, or for the really sensitive ones early Friday morning.....just to give everyone plenty of time to distinguish between the parties platforms.

Limits the flak.

nopes .... never got one.

However do let us know if you get audited anytime soon; will give me the req hint to start preparing (not that doing anything wrong) if I ever receive similar.

This is just the standard letter they send out just before the auditors go through you like a dose of salts.

We got this last year and then were audited less than 2 weeks after.

As long as you have every scrap of paper to necessarily back up all of your claims over the past 7 years, you'll be fine. Good luck. :)

Really?

So everyone that got one will be audited!?!

...or am I being sucked in

Dazz may or may not have been audited. Never can tell with his posts what's serious and what's not. However, I can say, that not everyone who gets those letters gets audited. They are standard letters mass mailed out. Although why are you scared of an audit.... ? :p

Thanks Biggles!

No, not scared of audit as I do everything within the letter of the law...parents instilled this 'truth' thing in me when I was young (goddamit!) so I feel physically sick telling lies

Definitely no link to an audit. We have had these letters in the past, several times, and now someone has explained it, then it ties in with perhaps the first time we prepaid the next year's interest. That is probably when we got our first one.

We also have nothing to hide, but know someone who was audited many years ago, and they drilled down and wanted to know what the $22 cheque was for going back a few years, on a certain date .

I cannot remember what I did three weeks ago, let alone three years ago.

I once received a nice letter from the ATO reminding me what I can and cannot claim as I was in the adult entertainment industry. The stuff they had under deductions allowed were fantastic.
I have no idea WHY OR HOW they sent me a letter?!?! I am not a dancer?!
That was when they were trying to crack down on strippers etc in the adult industry who were on cash income.

The better half got one yesterday, we bought our first shared investment property last financial year, and half of the first 3 months rental deductions would have shown up on her return. I doubt I will get a letter, as my deductions havent changed much since the previous year (I own 5 and a half, she owns a half)...

I keep getting letters for for claiming 5000k's on my "I" return, and while my claim is genuine, I have never been auditied...

But if you s%$# yourself and stop claiming what you are entitled to claim just because you got a letter (I hear this happens a bit), then the ATO will see this a red flag and ask for a "please explain" for the previous years.

The key is not to change what you are doing.

I was worried when i received the letter last week, was worried as it was my first one. was planning to talk to my tax agent, but as usual thought of checking it here. good decision. can sleep peacefully.

oh.. no... hv to watch the soccer tonight.

Hi Lamingtons.

Care to share what you did/do.

Regards
Marty

Hey Marty I wished that I had a great story of how I made squillions dancing on tabletops but alas no. I am not sure why they sent me the letter to be honest. I think it might have been what I ticked as why i was applying for an ABN. I ticked entertainment industry and it was to be a promo girl for a dance pole company at Sexpo Sydney. :) But I know alot of the girls in the industry - dancing and an ex escort.
But now I help someone run her private function agency in Melbourne and I use that ABN to invoice her for my commissions.

Thanks Lamingtons.

Sounds interesting. Definately not your usual 9-5 office job.

Regards
Marty

P.S For those with 9-5 office jobs, nothing wrong with that.

I do also have a 9 - 6pm job :)
The commission is to supplement my income and during wedding season it can be rather substantial plus I quite enjoy it on some days.
