Mining engineering jobs still out there - I know lots of people who completed the 4 year degree (with 12 weeks of relevant work experience completed) who are working at mines.

I did 5 years of mining in WA and experienced most of the rosters going these days (4&1, 3&1, 2&2, 2&1, 8&6-7&7) and to be honest I enjoyed the 4&1 the most, I had a great crew and was working near karijini national park so RDOs were spent sitting in some beautiful gorges. (4&1s pay the best money also)

Depending what you want to do I would recommend you chase local work doing the same role you want on the mines (ie if you want to be a machine operator seek out a local civil contractor) whilst applying for mining work. living on the central coast makes it harder too, although some company's will pay your flights interstate the majority won't. If you have a friend in Perth put their address on your resume (for WA mining jobs, put Brisbane for QLD jobs) and pay your own way to that capital (plenty of people are doing it)

Persistence and patience is key ;)

Hi Cargs
No of any one who has used Mining Aust to help find work, they apparently help with resume structuring it to the mining industry and assist in telling you what training would need to be done for what suits you the fee for this is $216 money well spent if they actually really get you in. They have testimonials but I do not trust what has been put their word and mouth is the truth, anyone know if this company any good.
Thanks

Never heard of them

Check out this mob, all the same stuff you mentioned for no charge, plus they list jobs http://mininglink.com.au/articles

What kind of role are you interested in?

The skills I have not to sure if can get me a job probably need some form of training, I have despatch and receiving which probably help me in a storemans role, have security license ,management in warehousing but no trade ticket skills.

Definately a good skillset for a store mans role but you will find it very difficult to get one as they're only a few onsite, security are often employed by the camps but again only a handful. I'd recommend getting your machine operators tickets and maybe seek local employment to gain experience

Depending on location - not very many jobs around currently for zero previous skills I'm sad to day. Obivously a lot easier during boom times - but even then for entry jobs (for example dump truck traineeships) they had hundreds of applicants.

We had an entry level technician role open up at the place I work for (no mining experiance required) & had a senior mining engineer apply for the job - so not a particularly good time to be looking for a role.

Mining engineer graduates are starting to struggle too from what I've heard. I believe most companies have stopped with redundancies by now, but many aren't hiring new.

I got a break onto the Gas GLNG line in QLD last yr.
I honestly dont think I would have got the job if not knowing a supervisor...
I have been currently applying for the past 3 weeks for another job but its pretty quiet till things crank up I want to try and go offshore

unless somebody has a contact ;)

tickets - (rigger, Bosiet, c6, dogman, WWH, confined spaces)

Give this a quick listen to, before heading out west. I hope that you are not married......... or have kids.

The good gigs are harder to come by these day, acts like Gorgon sharing rooms, that would of been unheard of 2 or 3 years ago. but everyone knows now there are 1400 blokes, willing to take your spot.

When I first started 2:2 (dream roster) gigs were a dime a dozen, 3 years on, they are as rare as hens teeth. I had 140 lads apply for my job. And I do something pretty specific too!

Well looks like I will have to stay with my 1 + 1 +? casual employment jobs to keep the cash coming in .
Thanks all for your replies.

At Gorgon I think they get $125 a day extra, if they agree to share a room (bunk bed), rooms all have an ensuite toilet/shower

Could be worse..hot-bedding and common use toilets and showers :D

Is there many Information Systems/Network manager/engineer jobs getting around in the mining sector?

Would love to know whether there is and there pay rates.

From what I've seen - None on a FIFO basis, which sucks because I'd like to do that because of how awesomely FIFO people get paid here.

That's because their IT guys generally work from their head office in Perth (and presumably other cities). I dont think they get paid any more than their counterparts in other industries, based on the same experience/skillset. If they have some specialist role then who knows :)

These high paying relatively low skill mining jobs are a bit like high yielding property, it won't last for ever and eventually equilibrium will take place and the jobs will dry up.

The only problem is people's expectations won't change and it's hard to down grade a lifestyle you are used to.

I've met many 25 yr olds that aren't particularly highly skilled say "omg, how the hell as a single male with no defendants or investments supposed to survive on 140k!!!"

Son of a work colleague walked straight from a diesel apprenticeship into a gig in Gladstone.

A mate has now spent the last 10+ years building dongers etc up in Orange, NW WA & Qld.

Yes, they had skills which were in demand and transferrable.

You haven't said what your background is (gee, they even need bean counters, property managers and paper shufflers).

You mightn't need to travel too far - plenty of mine work up in the Hunter Valley including CSG work.
