Just noticed that with the extension of Myki ticketing to key VLine services during the next month a number of stations become zone 2, with cheaper fares: Bacchus Marsh, Clarkefield, Donnybrook, Heathcote Junction, Lara, Little River, Riddells Creek, Wallan and Wandong - http://www.vline.com.au/fares-and-tickets/tickets/commuter.html . Probably not a huge saving in cash terms but may have a psychological effect.

buying my first property in ballarat I was assured of capital appreciation by the estate agent due to the fast train coming thru.... this was 2001.
I dont discount it, but in practice unless you work in the cbd and start and finish each day the same time, your better off driving into town rather than commuting by train.
