Hi Folks,

Some of you may be interested to know that the J.S.Battye Library has a photographic collection which contains many historic photos of WA's past, .

This includes some that are viewable online, including aviation-related photos dating back to 1921. Some of the gems include Maylands Aerodrome, Liberator at Perth Airport , Perth Airport terminal with the swans in the pond, the first Qantas 707 service, flying boats on the Swan River, visits by Bert Hinkler and Charles Kingsford-Smith. It also includes a photo of Kingsford-Smith when he flew for Norman Brearley on the first airline service in Australia - before Qantas. I looked up links in case you're interested:

Before my time intrigued, however what prompted the post was some old photo's sent by my old man including one with a couple of black swans in the pond there before the observation deck

For me as a kid I recall dressing up in our Sunday best to go on a plane and the adults smoking on the plane

I also recall that taking back a bucket of KFC on the plane back up north, was a "must" :D

A big outing for us was to travel in the back of dads ute, in our Sunday best and have tea.

It was what we thought was really plush.

Speaking KFC I remember the first openning at Melville we lined up for hours.

Nice one Redwing, I remember pressing my face up against the glass many a time at the observation point to watch my dad hop on a Jumbo jet.
