Rental Rebate?

Friends saw their accountant yesterday on non property related matters and were told if they rented out their PPOR and then rented a substitute residence for a lower rent that there is a non means tested government rental rebate. The accountant told them this is very new.

If yesterday was April 1st I wouldn't pay any attention to it, but is there some possibility this guy was correct?

any idea which government department the accountant suggested this would be done through? At a state level I assume??

Do your friends have children? if they do it may just be rent assistance paid with Family tax benefit. You can still get it even if you have rental property. Of course as long as you fulfil the normal income test etc.
