So what do Adelaide people think of the new proposal today for the western railyards site in the city?

Without going into the details too much (which if this were to go ahead will change 100 times before a final masterplan is decided on), this is a brilliant proposal. Bring some life back into the CBD and create a destination precinct similar to what other Aussie cities have (albeit probably still smaller scale).

Also without getting into the debate about the hospital in regards to whether we need a new one or can redevelop the old one - I'll leave that for more qualified people such as the doctors etc - it would be such a waste to use this vast tract of land to just plonk down a hospital in the middle of it. The hospital can be built elsewhere if needed, don't waste this potentially beautiful precinct on something that doesn't need that prime location to function.

I agree. This is an opportunity that can't afford to be lost imo. The whole Western side has so much potential and with good planning could well be what Adelaide needs and has always lacked.

As for the hospital I say leave it. Trust me they will pull services from elsewhere (called centralizing ) and sell off where they can to fund it (already doing it).

I don't trust this Labor government here in SA one bit.

That's not Adelaide!
Too many cranes in the picture.

Seriously, it's about time someone with half a brain put forward a half decent idea. Fancy putting a Hospital under a flightpath and on a contaminated site. The stadium idea is great. An even better idea is to relocate the police barracks and extend the complex through to the Botanic Park boundary.
having a soprting come entertainment strip on the city fringe will revitailse the west end. So many events could be along held there. The govt may as well try something else. Everything they've tried so far has failed.
My tip: He will he Rann out of office at next election.

Project 1080

The project: 10 IPs in 80 mths.

i think it looks good. just got back from melbourne. what a lot of redevelopement! but still has kept the historical charm of the city.
adelaide needs a better public transport system and a lot more.
keep the hospital. just improve it.
it is shameful what is planned for the glenside site.
i would like to see a new government.
but i wonder if ranns lot can be moved.
i am sick of the land tax rate and the save the murray levy etc.
the water business has been handled very poorly.
i wonder how much was paid to the international cyclist?
and the motor race and the semi temp stand etc how much all that costs?
it seems any thing that is favored by some members of the govt, endless amounts of tax payers money is spent.
but the sick or poor are left to manage the best they can or not.
just my opinion.
regards

They did use some artistic license with the sketches, but there is a lot of development in the CBD at the moment, especially on the eastern side around Hindmarsh Square etc.

I like your idea about the police barracks. The precinct could eventually strectch all the way around the river on both sides pretty much to include the existing hotels, fesitval centre, casino, convention centre on North Tce, the new stadium and science centre, Bonython park continued for temporary events as usual, and on the other side you already have Adelaide oval, golf course, sports fields on Park Tce etc.

Obviously this can be done in stages over the next 20yrs, but if done right, it could be a brilliant civic precinct.

Or, we could forget all that and just build a hospital on the site.......

PS I haven't really followed it a great deal in the past, but has the Govt. considered other sites for the hospital if it's decided we absolutely have to have one?

What about:
- Keswick army barracks
- on a small portion of the land on West Tce
- small portion of land on South Tce
- along Sir Edwin Smith Ave (opposite Women & Childrens and Memorial Hospital - heaven forbid have a medical precinct!)
- Frome Rd next to the zoo
- sports fields on Port Rd next to the railway lines just before the bridge
- corner of Greenhill & Fullarton Rds
- small portion of the sports fields on Robe Tce, which don't seem to be used if the state of the grass/dirt is any indication
- etc etc etc.

Or are they too stubborn to back down now that they've made it public that's the location they want for the new hospital?

Hospital on the corner of Greenhill rd and Fullerton rd sounds good , you can just stagger accross the road from the Arkaba !!

Actually scrap that idea Granev - that proposal would involve chopping down some trees on the site, and we all know how Adelaide City Council feel about that. How many accidents occur each year at the Britania roundabout? Oh but those 12 trees are much more important!:rolleyes:

The crn of Greenhill and Fullarton rd has already been benchmarked for the fraction of the original sized you beaut state of the art  psych hospital.

Also to be constructed is a yet another supermarket and shopping precinct and wetlands.

Steve is right lots of trees of significance there. There are also heritage buildings on site and the Burnside residents to contend with .

The location of where the RAH stands now is ideal as it's close to the botanical gardens the uni and Medical school as well as other independant medical support services.

Contrary to what a lot of people think and have been told there is a decent amount of land around the back for underground car parks and extra facilities and the existing buildings are not all at capacity or about to crumble and fall.

Oi, watch it. Rob and I live in that neck of the woods! :p

I am really excited about this; we should use the River more - crikey, even Melbourne is proud of the mud called the Yarra so lets develop the Torrens. I am a member of Football Park and once I went to Docklands in Melbourne I realised what a dump Football Park really is. The Entertainment centre is poorly designed, and I understand the convention centre really needs to expand.

The RAH - leave it where it is and develop it - it is in the perfect location. Great Britain manages to continually upgrade its hospitals, I dont get Rann's concept on this at all. Does he simply want a plaque?
