For those of you doing a low budget DIY reno you should check out this debit card product from ING. Will help you shave a few more $$ of your IP costs.
The offer:
Free Visa Debit card from ING with 5% cashback on Paywave purchases until mid 2013 (max $100 per transaction).
http://campaigns.ingdirect.com.au/everyday-banking?cid=ccm:rdl:pwv:ref
The strategy:
1) Tell your friendly Bunnings/Masters cashier you want to buy 20 x $100 Bunnings giftcards using your ING paywave card. Bit fiddly and it might take 10 minutes or so. Zap your card with Paywave (don't swipe it) with each purchase.
2) You now have 20x$100 giftcards (plus ING has rebated $100 into your debit card account).
3) Purchase your $2000 kitched or paint or whatever using the 20 giftcards.
Probably works out closer to 7% value when you consider the rebate is tax free and on a deductable purchase.
4) Go and buy 2 slabs of beer with your $100 for your efforts...you deserve it!
You can also use this to save money anywhere that has paywave...works at Coles and Woolworths by way of example. Also most service stations let you use paywave for your fuel.
Enjoy!
