Skin Care/Beauty/Health Products

Hi All

Just curious how much do you/partner spend pa on this stuff. This could include hair products, skin, vitamins, make up etc.

Most of the products on the market are outrageously expensive and not sure if they work if you believe some of the reviews.

Moisturisers, cleaners, toners - in majority of cases the ingredients include alcohol and fragrance which can actually damage the skin.

I am no expert, but I am not into spending $100+ for 4 oz bottle of moisturising cream. I am trying to educate my youngest daughter and it is starting to work, she is only 16 so $100 is not something she can afford to part with.

This is one example where you can save $.

Dermatologists recommend sorbolene 500 ml bottle, which is around $5.00 which acts as a moisturiser. I have been using this for years and I highly recommend this. It works, in the past I have been suckered into expensive moisturisers only to be very disappointed.

Anyone else got any tips to save money in this area or a product something that works for you and wont break the bank.

MTR:)

+1 for the dermatologist recommended Sorbolene - all in one. No need for separate face body and hand cr?mes.

This is also used as an alternative to soap and for very sensitive skin, recommended by dermatologist and also cheap, chemist will have this.

Cetaphil

mmmm... might give it a go. If I notice attention from the ladies, then I'll definitely keep it up.

Yes, sorbolene here too.

I use a variety of shampoos, whatever is cheapest.
At the moment I am using Kid's Superman 2 in 1.
If I don't like one as a shampoo, I use it has a bodywash.

I'm addicted to lip balm, so always wear that.

We keep a pump bottle of sunscreen in the van, to apply as needed while driving.

I've used bio oil for scars. It works. But too much use can cause pimples.

Also, for skin - once a day use, I get Dove Moisturiser. It works. It's not expensive...like $10 a tube.

The only expensive pieces of make up I ever get are Napolean Peridis blush and Clinque powder.

Love perfumes though... :) - Lancome, Christian Dior and Armani varieties are good. But over the past year or so I've been allergic and sneeze/get runny nose even if I'm in presence of a faint scent.. :(

the problem with these expensive/cheap stuff is that its impossible to say whether it works better or not, unless you have something to compare against, which obviously is impossible

a $100 tube of cream might be the same, twice as better or ten times as better as a $10 tub,

how will we ever know!

and im assuming you are talking about anti ageing cream

I guess it's just trial and error, refer to recommendations, reviews and take it from there. At the end of the day we know more $ does not necessarily equate to a better product.

Yes, in the main I am referring to moisturising creams which does include the anti ageing products. What I think most important thing is protect your skin is using sun screen daily, shame I did not do this when I was younger. In my twenties the big thing was using tanning oils and sitting in the sun all day frying, thankfully I don't think this does happens anymore.

As I said I have used Sorbolene for years and at one point decided to try Olay one of their moisturising creams, these products are excellent and approx. $39. However, I thought Sorbolene did the trick and much cheaper.

I'm a face cream tragic, but I'm not loyal to any brand. I like to look for specials on strawberrynet, ozsale, etc. I think my skin looks ok for my age, but I wish my mother had encouraged me to look after my skin. She's never used face creams and she's quite wrinkly. I think if I had invested in big sunglasses and a good eye cream earlier in life I'd have less crows feet now. And that will be my advice for my own daughter as she grows up: if you can only afford one premium product buy a good eye cream and just use cheap but gentle products (e.g. cetaphil and CV lotion) for the rest.

I use QV Bath Oil (bit like Cetaphil) on my body in the shower and that cleans and moisturises. My skin is very sensitive. Bath Oil is excellent for using instead of shaving cream for legs :)

If I need moisturiser then I tend to use sorbelene

On my face I use a tinted moisturiser with suncream in it. Generally this is the Olay 7 in 1 and I get it from OS where it's cheaper.

DH uses Palmolive gold everywhere and I despair that is very drying but he doesn't care.

I have seen a dermatologist that recommended sorbolene but I don't like it. I uses Janesce, sukin, Natural instinct, etc. I avoid the big expensive brands as they are heavily perfumed and as my GP says, some expensive make up removers include acetone which is used for nail polish remover.

How much do you pay for Olay???

Choice do trails on cosmetics etc.

I just use Oil of Olay face cream. I also use Witch Hazel for a toner. Have used it for years. I just buy it in Woolies and it's not dirt cheap but much cheaper than the brand name ones and it's a big bottle. I don't have many wrinkles for my age. When I was younger I went in the sun a bit but wasn't into sunbaking my face. My mother always told me "whatever beauty treatments yoo do to your face, also do to your neck and chest". Wrinkly necks and chest give away womens ages I think. I just use Dove soap on my face. And I have to have lip balm with me 24/7 too.

I'm a moisturizer tragic. I have them everywhere I sit. At home on my desk, dining table, coffee table, in the car, at my desk at work, on the floor where I sit with the kids. I get that from my nan. She was always applying hand cream. I don't buy expensive ones though. I load up in Bali each trip. Whenever I get a manicure I always get comments on my soft hands.

The only expensive products I use are the "free" samples I get when I travel business class on planes. I have to admit I do love the loccitane products. I get them as presents sometimes.:D

I buy high quality and its always cheaper off amazon and eBay usually

I dated a skin specialist for a while and she put me on to all this stuff, couldn't believe the difference it made
