Will Melbourne really grow larger than Sydney?

Often touted by the mainstream media that Melbourne will overtake Sydney as Australia's largest city sometime in the next 20 years.

Common reasons brandied about are that Sydney is bounded mountain regions on all sides hence cannot easily grow outwards therefore they can only grow into higher density. Melbourne on the other hand can keep expanding as north / north east and west are all relatively flat farm land. Also, easier to build infrastructure e.g. outer ring road... to connect the urban sprawl via freeways.

Overall, Melbourne seems to come across as more 'liveable' hence higher net growth rates etc.

Interested to hear everyones opinions.


Hopefully this doesnt turn into a Melb v Syd flame war

Guess youd want to ask the average migrant which version of big smoke they prefer

Its been true for a long time that the median entry houseprice in Melb has been lower, but to suggest that Sydney is bounded by Mountains to the SW is hilarious, thats about right when you leave Sydney and get to the Snow
