Google Earth is really handy, although very out of date. Interesting seeing a house with what looks like half a dozen vacant blocks of land around it and then turning up to find the house surrounded by half a dozen new houses and building sites!
 
Learn to love your local RE. They dont get much love but they sure blossom when you show some.

RE.com is excellent for due diligence regarding rental yields - especially finding out which developers are dumping unsold stock on the rental market....
 
I methodically work backwards from research:

1. Research suburb on net.
2. If possible, visit suburb.
3. Re.com property views, THEN, rental views...
4. Research again....
5. Put in low ball offer to unsuspecting agent. :D
