Meet the sandwich generation

lived like this in London, 12 people give or take a few in a 3.5 bedroom townhouse. you would start on the lounge, then get promoted to one of the two beds in the laundry, then it was into one of the shared bedrooms, then the ultimate... the solo occupation of the box room (that was a tightly held spot... 'Dave' had that room for all the years I knew of that house.

always good fun and plenty to do

Reading an article about the Sandwich Generation and Multigenerational Living

Members of the "sandwich generation" - typically in their forties, fifties or sixties - are still supporting their children, trying to save for own retirement yet also spending much time, and possibly money, helping care for their ageing parents.

In other words, they are "sandwiched" between the needs of their children and their parents - while attempting to look after their own interests.

Which lead into

Two Generations, Retired and Together

Longer lives and pensions have meant families with retirees from two generations in one family.

Apparently before World War II, about 25 percent of Americans lived in multigenerational households

We are currently building a large (circa $1.2m build) house that will house 3 generations. Grandparents, their kids, and their grandchildren.

4 Bedrooms, living, kitchenette and laundry chutes upstairs. Downstairs is full kitchen, 2 living areas, "Guest Suite"(grandparents, 920 door and hobless showers and such) and a study/extra bedroom.

Laundry Chutes...kids will love that :D

I have a friend who has a 2 bedroom home, with an attached 'flat' where her parent reside. The 'flat' is a kitchenette, shower & bedroom with use of the dunny out the back.

There are plans to build a GF out the back for the parents, and for them to extend the home so that the 'flat' gets properly incorporated into the home. They were about to do this, when the parents moved in. They've been living like this for some time now.
