Coin Collectors - 1 and 2 cent Aus coins

I've got a few rare coins I want to get rid of that are quite dirty. Would it be OK to clean them in Coke or something else before I sell? Don't know much about coin collections, just researched what they are worth on ebay and how many were circulated from a book I borrowed from library.

Definetly "not" if selling to a collector..you may get this reaction  and reduce the value severely

There are some good books at the library including

The 2010 Pocket Guide to Australian Coins & Banknotes

There is also a subjective grading system for coins as to degrees of wear; see the ANDA PDF Guide

Going through the process myself of sorting a large coin collection, a number handed down to me plus many that I've added to the collection over the years

Problem with getting a large collection valued is that the cost of getting a professional valuer may be worth more than the collection itself. Many may only be worth face value; best to sort what you can yourself and get to a short list of your more valuable coins that you can get valued at one of the collectors events such as listed by Depreciator

Next ANDA show in WA

Perth: 5th and 6th February 2011
Venue: Burswood Casino, Perth.

Things to consider when selling a collection of coins to a dealer

They will discount the true market val.
They will want to purchase only the better ones in the collection.
Insisting on the dealer to buy the entire collection will get you a better price overall providing there are some high quality coins.

Gerd.

A curiousity that I received in change some years ago is a one dollar note and the serial numbers on it are different. One number ends in 89 and the other in 91. At the time I didn't know about fluorescent markers (I think it was December 1975): one of the numbers had been highlighted in fluorescent orange and the 'other' number written above that. I guess it must have been done at the mint.

Hi Pete

Would you be better off doing some research on the valuations and contacting a local collectors club for any interested purchasers then Gerd?

Asking for someone else..

What is the best way to sell stuff like uncirculated shillings, etc.
I've been told some of the coins are worth around $800 each. I'm not sure what size collection is.

I guess it could be fairly risky trying to self value although worth having a go to have some idea.

They were planning on selling 4/week on ebay, surely there is much better ways.

Make sure you talk to someone who is passionate about coins, not someone in the market for coins to avoid some conflict of interest.
