common areas in commercial buildings

They physically can, unless blockade yellow bulldozers with Arthur Dents
Whether they are permitted to, and/or get away with it if they do when they are not permitted to is a matter for the legal eagles of contract law.

Can an owner remove common areas without body corporate knowledge?

I'm not sure what you mean by removing common areas.

The common area is owned jointly by all the owners of the individual units and may comprise of driveways, yeards, stairs foyers etc. It is managed by the Body Corporate.

It's not yours to do anything with and you need permission form the Body Corporate to make alterations etc
