My younger sister is looking to purchase a property up in Darwin and is quite inexperienced. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a good mortgage broker up in Darwin that may be able to assist her.

On a similar vein, an internet search turned up loanmarket.com.au has anyone had any experience with them? thoughts?

    cheers, poyner

The mortgage choice team up there was highly regarded when I was in the network. Maybe not investor specialists but doesn't sound like your sister needs that.

Any particular reason you want a local broker? You can do as well with a southern broker in my experience

Yes good point many of us regularly deal with interstate / overseas borrowers without face to face meetings. Not for everyone and a few lenders don't officially allow it but it's just as easy.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. I'll take a look at mortgagechoice as well.

I thought about the option of a non local broker but I felt that she'd much prefer having someone visit her and sit down and explain her options etc and how to structure her homeloans to best effect (ie IO with offset etc.). I didn't feel that the 'over the phone' option would have the same level of hand holding that she might require.

Speaking very bluntly, I think that a lot of Darwin locals have empty boxes of bananas out the back of their offices for the simple reason that they're all monkeys. Buying property requires a reliable valuer and money, whichever way you get it. You can do it from anywhere. Hand holding and speaking face to face is nice, but it's all raw mathematics/statistics in the end. The smiley chatty bank manager face doesn't care about you. Nor does their word mean anything. When you're playing with your life savings, all that counts is the bottom line.

I'm not bitter, just clinical - I've just seen too many people put faith in their good buddy bank manager and get left out in the cold pulling their hair out.

Id suggest the thread starter pick up the phone and speak with Marty

Video Skype can do almost all the same as face to face

Brent & Kylie Rodda at LoanMarket are very good as well as pleasant to deal with. Kylie would be worth at least having a chat to, even if your sister decides to go with someone else in the end.

    Kylie's phone number is 08 8943 3083.
