Do you think I could make a couple of dollars

My friend is selling his MP3 player for $200 if I want it, I don't have much of a need for it. Well I have but I would rather try to make a couple of dollars.

Do you think I could sell it for $300 on Ebay? He purchased it for $400 and it is still in brand new condition it is still the latest that Toshiba has for sale!

Do you think the risk is worth giving it a go! I haven't purchased it yet so I could say ya or nay still!?

do a search on ebay and see what second hand ones are selling for.

if you think it will sell then maybe do your ad now with a sell price of $300 and if it sells then complete your sale with your mate.

Thanks Simon.

The closest one I can find currently on ebay is this one the only different is it's 60g and this is 30g. It's starting bid is set at $380 and it's not sold though the auction is not over yet the same seller has a few of them going.

Maybe if I started an action at buy now for $300 they will think it's a bargain over the $380 for what really is the very same player it's just more space that most will not even need!

Twobobsworth, I don't think I would be ruining a friendship over it I have been mates with this bloke since I was climbing out of home and going up to there place at 16 and we been mates right through life. I am helping him buying it in the first place because he needs the money so I guess helping a mate can only strengthen mates. If I took the risk of loosing money on it then I would not turn around and blame him for selling me a MP3 player that I could not sell to make money on. If I try it I will be accountable for my own actions.

Maybe I could say I will give you $150 or $175 to then make more a certainty of making a couple of dollars.

What do you think is the risk worth it. Would you do it? They are actually a very good player it's got windows in it.

When we need to offload things, we give it to an "expert seller" to put on ebay. If they offload for us, we give them a cut of what they managed to get for us. :)

Cheers,

Sounds like a reasonable idea what is the commission. One negative to that is that I am trying to establish an Ebay identity whenever I get an opportunity. I have sold three large retail things so far which has been over a year or two now and have 100% positive feedback.

Though the benefits of an established seller does sound good it's just not going to help me build my Ebay reputation.

A couple of new ones of same model in white have recently sold for $290.
A black one sold for $305.
A used white one sold for $215.

So your friends offer to you is about right.
It's a fast sale for him and he wouldn't have to pay fees on the sale like on eBay.

There really wouldn't be much in it I think, and there are risks involved.

Good Luck.

Mmm, I think your not far off the mark.

I've offered someone out of Ebay $300 to buy it and they have told me to hold off submitting an Ebay auction until tomorrow as he needs to ask wife if he can buy it.

If it we're to go to Ebay auction and I put $20 dollars on the postage and delivery fee that would cover all the Ebay sales fees. But if it did not sell at a minimum of $300 then Ebay also offers to submit the same add for Auction sale again at NO cost and again and again. So it could run the add a few times over a few auctions maybe that would mitigate a bit of the risk.

I mean it's only $100 but I'm not doing much else this weekend and I've just cutting loose on a PC again.

If they end up paying $380 plus for those 60gig ones in the links I put above then the 30gig is not really that much different it's the same Player just a little less gigs. But 30 is big and good. It will come with a charger to and a set of headphones so those extras I don't think come with it when you purchase normally.

As far as I know, you can only relist once for free if your 1st attempt does not sell.

Otherwise everybody would be running 1 day listings to so their listing would always be near the top of the list.

If you want to build your feedback, then the transaction could be good for you at a low risk. Just be careful of Paypal chargebacks with this kind of item and keep all registered/insured postage documentation.

Good Luck.

Hang on something else has come into the deal. It has a nice slick leather case that he sent away to England for, that encases it and protects it which he paid $70 for. He wants to keep the headphone the charger comes with it.

I'm listening to the Radio now and it is excellent quality sound. It's loaded with Porn it has dozens and dozens of clips not sure I should send that with it if it goes to Auction then again they say sex sells! He has also made a mistake ordering the leather case and ordered a second leather carry case come with the deal. That could be sold separately or both sold separately.

We just plugged it into the TV and played videos on the big TV Screen!

What do you think?

Your quiet right, I was guessing, it didn't come with ear phones and the charger came with it! Only two extra things is the two separate carry cases he bought at $70 each.

I also think you get a relist but not over and over again. My understanding is that if you relist once and it doesn't sell that time, that is the end of your "freebies".

Be very careful with charging $20 for postage to cover your fees. People will resent such high postage. I have found (as both a buyer and a seller) that being totally upfront about postage costs is better. I don't load my postage even for packaging materials (because I get them free - bubblewrap etc) and am totally honest and think charging high postage is an invitation for your buyer to give you negative feedback, which you don't want.

My son just sold a game and the postage cost $4 less than my estimate from the Aust. Post website, only because the game "just" fit through the measuring slot at the post office so went for $1 instead of $5 as expected. I offered the buyer a $4 refund. They didn't want the refund, but I know they appreciated the offer.

But we have also bought headphones for $1 with $29 postage from Hong Kong. Still a good buy but just makes the seller look dodgy in my book. If they want a certain price for the goods, I reckon they should just start the auction higher and put the actual postage on the listing.

Loading the postage and selling the item cheaper reduces the sellers charges by ebay as they are calculated on sale price not on overall price.

So charging $99 for postage and $1 for an item that is worth $100+ is common practice for savvy HK based vendors!

Simon. I have never thought of it that way. But no matter how much money they save, the fact is that we just generally ignore the Hong Kong or Singapore listings because of this practice, so they also must be missing many sales. Maybe they still have enough to not care about the ones they miss.

If you check the feedback of many of these type of sellers, they often have thousands of feedback, but very often dozens or hundreds of neutral or negative feedback, so I wonder if they are cutting off their nose to spite their face really. Once I see that type of feedback, I skip it entirely.

The other issue is that overseas postage can be a trap when your item does not work. This has happened to us and even if the seller says "send it back, and we will send another one" this usually means spending so much on return postage that it would have been cheaper to buy in Australia. When the cost of sending it back, added to what we have already paid gets up to the cost of buying here, I just write it off to experience, but another reason we generally avoid overseas sellers.

I was stung by a HK seller - ie small auction price but huge postage bill. I was sent a very poor imitation after many weeks, and only after I reported them to ebay. And your postage costs are not covered by paypal if there is a dispute, only the cost of the item.

If you use paypal as a method of receiving payment, then there are also cossts involved here too; on the sale and then on extracting your cash, unless you want to keep your paypal in credit if you then purchase something.

And please dont guess about something you are selling, that will come back to bite you on the backside as the buyer will know what they are buying and report you for misleading them.

Actually it did come with a little set of earphones I asked him last night and he said it didn't then I noticed a set in the box and asked again and he said it came with it.

I have observed high postage costs on Ebay and have been put off by high postage costs it seem that it's just a bit of a rip off or a way to up the dollar return a bit, but most everyone seems to do it, i suppose that doesn't mean follow the heard. But I thought $20 might have been a reasonable postage cost. Would $12 Postage & Handling go down well?

I bit the bullet and gave the $200 Cash last night. My thinking is I was going to install a new CD Radio Player in the traveling van which would have cost me about $250 including some speakers. So if I end up with it it will be aright. And I get to play around with a kind of device I haven't used before.

I will Auction it in the next couple of days WIN - LOSE or DRAW for a quick 3 day auction and start the bidding @ $250 with a 'BUY IT NOW' button @ $270 without the nice leather carry case. And because I now have two of them I will sell each one of them separate if they $70 new and they second hand they might reach $30 to sell each so that be $60 profit. I don't think there is a benefit to selling it with the carry case since they are an extra and generally not purchased with one!

As if I'm trying to miss-lead. Nor had I actually looked for myself which I would do before placing an add I just made the assumption in this thread while chatting about it. My policy is to be up front with everything and that's my style and always has been!

Definitely list the player and the covers separately, you will make more that way.

Definitely list about 9.30pm (or pay the 20 cents and have ebay start it at about that time of night). This way you have more chance of getting a good price as people are at home and no doubt, watching the auction finish, and ready to bid higher at the last minute. (You probably already know this.)

Definitely wrap your music thingy really well in bubble wrap and a good thick envelope or box and then weigh it. Log on to Aust Post website and give a postage cost to, say, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth etc. To enable the listing to go through you will probably have to nominate a postage cost so pick the middle price and make sure you put in the listing description that you have nominated estimated postage costs but you will give a definite cost to them if they email you with their postcode. It is a bit of extra work, but covers your backside.

That way you are not ripping anyone off, and not losing anything by underestimating the cost of postage.

And I agree with Adrian about the listing, it is a terrible photo. Take a better one if possible and I'd go for a 5 day listing but make sure it doesn't finish on a Friday or Saturday night because people will be out.

Good luck,

Wylie
