Does the contract of sale need to be witnessed?

Just spoke to my solicitor they seem to think it's not a requirement anymore?
Anyone know if this is in fact correct and set in concrete?

Your soli is correct - it is not a legal requirement.

It was always a crock anyway - no space for a witness name, address or age (over 18). The witness signature could have been a scribble from a 5 year old for all anybody knew.

In Victoria, the contract doesn't but the Transfer of Title needs to be witnessed.

In NSW does not have to be witnessed either. The new contract for sale due to be released shortly will be interesting to see bearing in mind electronic conveyancing is coming in shortly as well.

I wonder what the solicitor who gave me a 2000 version recently is going to do.
