How many different potatoes are there?

I wanted to try some new recipes and I needed some potatoes. I went to Coles, I could not find the potatoes. Then I went to Woolworth, still could not find the exact potatoes needed for the recipes.
What I found out was that these shops don't stock same type of potatoes.

There are desiree, red rascall, white brushed, golden, etc etc..Am so confused..

The 'brushed potatoes' are actually Sebago potatoes which are floury potatoes - and are best used for things like chips or baking. Desiree/red rascals are all-rounders that are good for baking/mashing/chips. There's so many other varieties that I forget them...the labeling in the major supermarkets is misleading at best, wrong at worst.

Sometimes you come across recipes that state a type of potato is to be used, but there are alternative potatoes that are just as suitable.

There's no real need to run around looking for a specific potato.
