Is it necessary to get a boundary survey?

I'm buying a turnkey/completed brand new house, in a new estate..all freehold land/no body corp or any stuff like that.

the house was completed approx. Sep 2010, the developer of the estate i believe built all the fencing etc. is it necessary to do any checks on the boundaries/encroachments/etc, and if so is this only possible if we purchase/arrange a boundary survey?

surely if the house is only recently built, either the builder would have ensured building it in the right spot, or the developer when they put the fences in got it right, or all the adjoining neighbours when they purchased/built they would have checked this..right?

No one has asked us or advised us to get one, but Just want to see what the norm is/what we should be doing.. purchase in QLD btw :)
