Major funding announcement for Ringwood Transit City

Its about time!!!!!

Ringwood is set to become the economic and employment hub of Melbourne’s outer east thanks to the State Government’s $39 million revitalisation of the town centre.
Premier John Brumby today announced the investment as part of the Victorian Government’s Transit Cities program.

“This first stage of improvements will see more than 1,400 construction jobs and more than 1,500 ongoing jobs in the retail and office sectors, helping make Ringwood a well serviced, vibrant, attractive and economically stronger centre,” Mr Brumby said.

“With 50 percent of Ringwood residents aged between 25-54 years of age, this project has enormous potential to shore up Ringwood as a major economic and employment hub in Melbourne’s east.

“That’s why we are investing $39 million over the next three years to work with the council and community to begin to realise this vision.”

The funding will deliver:
• Completion of a new town square and urban heart for Ringwood;
• Improved safety around Maroondah Highway including a new pedestrian crossing;
• A new bus interchange to be utilised by some 7,000 rail and bus passengers; and
• Further work with the council to attract additional investment in the area.

“This is a real investment in Ringwood’s future and will complement the proposed major redevelopment of Eastland Shopping Centre by Queensland-based developer, QIC.

“The investment builds on our Government’s track record of strong economic growth, creating solid job prospects for Victorians and keeping us the economic powerhouse of the nation,” Mr Brumby said.

Planning Minister Justin Madden said Ringwood was ready for investment and development.

“Ringwood is in a great location. It’s close to Eastlink and has access to two train lines giving it great potential to grow,” Mr Madden said.

“We are already seeing significant investment in the area with the proposed $500 million major expansion of Eastland Shopping Centre.

“These redevelopments will give people of Ringwood a new town centre that will be well designed, and serve as a major economic and employment centre.”

Mr Madden said general construction works around the bus interchange are expected to start in late 2009.

The investment is part of the Brumby Government’s Melbourne 2030, more than $400 million Transit Cities program already underway in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, La Trobe, Warragul, Sydenham, Frankston, Werribee, Box Hill, Epping, Broadmeadows, Dandenong and Footscray.

The Transit Cities program revitalises key metropolitan and regional centres making them economically stronger and better places to live, work and raise a family.

I'm not selling my Ringwood IP's now (not that I ever would anyway) :D
