Melbourne

Im going to melbourne next year for the australian open, will be staying from the 15th-19th jan, anyway i was wondering if any of you melb people can give me ideas of where i can stay? Im thinking of staying in an apartment for the week, dont want anything too expensive though, it has to have parking facilities! any ideas? Or if anyone knows of any house holiday rentals? would be great, thanks

I can't give personal recommendations- but I've always done OK booking through wotif.com - I've had some excellent prices (holiday apartments as well as motel rooms)- though the prices are usually best closer to the event.

My last time in Melbourne, we had a lovely furnished 2BR unit in Prahran- great for a family.

Disclaimer- I'm happy with a place to sleep that's clean. I don't need 5 star accommodation.

(Though MrsW, who is fussier than myself, has been happy with the choices we've made so far).

Thanks for that ill check it out, ive been looking almost all day, it's driving me insaine! If anyone else has any ideas? Post away ill check them all out, thanks!

Hi Nikolina,

What do you consider too expensive? Also, think about your car-park requirement, Melbourne has excellent public transport - it's generally much easier and faster than driving - especially to the Open! And it will take you almost anywhere you need to go (I live on it personally - even though we have a car). But, if you stay anywhere near Southbank or South Melbourne - you can become a member of the Crown Casino Club (free) and park your car for free in their carpark.

Wotif.com is my favorite site for last minute accomodation - or standbyrates.com.au - but that's about 2 weeks beforehand for the cheap rates. If I were you, I'd have a good search on Google!! There are deals everywhere! You could also organise something with your flights through the airlines or a travel agent. Also, you're requirements may be too short-term, but I believe there's a website called gumtree.com.au (or something similar) where people advertise their short-term properties for rent or needed for rent - you could make a post with your requirements - I believe it's a free site?? If you like top-class accomodation with lots of action and the best location I'd stay at the Crown Casino Prominade (cheaper than the Crown Casino, but the same place - and if you know a member ;) ;) (send me a PM) it's pretty affordable for what you get - about 50% off for 5 star - I always put my parents up there for arond $100/night - prices definitly could differ over the Open though!

If you get really desperate, let me know, you can always rent our house - we'll take a much needed holiday :D - we live in Yarraville, pretty trendy little place, about 10 min from the city.

Cheers,
Jen

"Melbourne has excellent public transport" Last time i went down i hated the public transport, got lost half the time, caught the wrong trams, couldnt find my way to places etc, ive allways said if i were to go again i would drive, so im sticking by my word! As for Wotif.com and standbyrates.com.au ive looked at them but im not to keen on leaving it to last minute. I want to make sure i have things booked atleast one month in advanced otherwise ill tend to stress thiking that ive got my tickets but what if i cant find accomodation all because ive left it to the last minute. gumtree.com.au, ill make sure i check out that site, sounds good so thankyou. Top-class doesnt intrerest me, as long as the hotel/apartment etc is clean and has basic utilities i would be pretty happy. As for your house well u never know, if i become totally desperate im sure ull hear frome me :)

Has anyone told you about hook turns? ;)

Melbourne CBD and inner suburbs indeed has excellent public transport. As for getting lost, we have a good grid street layout, routes are fairly direct and it's rare for trams not to follow the tracks ;) However unless travelling outside the CBD, it's better to give the city rail loop a miss due to its unusual midday reversal.

Too funny, these are one of the reasons I don't drive in Melbourne - they're OK to tackle on Claredon St in South Melbourne - but within the CBD - good god! I'd rather ride on the tram their made for.

I agree that Melbourne's transport is one of the best I've ever encountered (besides Williamstown train line  ) I've also never been able to navigate a city so easily - it's basically a square, and west to east just remember King William, Queen Elizabeth - and South to North every street is followed by it's same name with a "Little" in front of it (eg. Collins St, Little Collins St - Lonsdale St, Little Lonsdale St) - too easy!

I can draw up a great mud map in about 2 minutes of the whole city - this has navigated many a friend in town without a worry.

If only the weather was nicer.........I would live here forever :D

A few self contained apartments that come to mind are Oaks on Collins, ask for a view over Collins Street, the facades on the buildings are amazing. The other side of the building is very noisy. Rubbish trucks in the wee hours of the morning. They now have another one just around the corner at Oaks on Market.

Quest is another group worth investigating. They have several properties spread throughout Melbourne. Lygon Street, Chapel Street, Bourke Street, William Street. questapartments.com.au

Another good site is AussieApartments.com.au

Have fun picking the one thats right for you. Be sure to ask if parking is available.

Come to think of it, what is parking like at the Open? I assume it's parking at the G? Getting in and out in peak traffic would be a pain.... Anyone know the costs?

Cheers,
