Moving interstate

I'm considering an interstate relocation (Perth to Sydney) so wanted to soundboard some things with you guys.

Firstly, for those of you who have moved interstate, how did you find a place to live? Anyone have contacts of of a PM who'd be able to help me line up something prior? I've moved interstate before (SA) and was able to stay with a relative temporarily while i searched. I wouldn't have that luxury in Sydney.

Secondly, cost of relocating furniture. One option could be to rent my current PPOR out furnished (improves serviceability if i purchase in Sydney, and also saves having to relocate it). Other options could be to take it with me (how much does this cost?) or sell it up here and buy again over there.

Finally, anyone who has spent some time in both Perth and Sydney recently want to comment on general cost of living? Eg, food, transport etc

Oh and car. I have a 2006 Mitsubishi 380 which is good for another million kilometers. Drive it over there vs transport it over there vs sell it (Mitsu terrible resale) and buy something over there.

I would sell the car and try to rent a place where you don't need a car! You are in IT so most working places will have plenty of units around.

Nice car is always good for a young guy though ;)

Sydney is a very expensive place to live. High cost of rent, food and utilities. One bedroom shoebox near the city will cost over 400/week. I would recommend buying some cheap furniture when you arrive. All you really need to get started is a bar fridge, a mattress and a table/chair. The rest can all be bought later when you are more settled.

Sounds like Perth to me

A serviced apartment or just a shared house in Gumtree would be fine until you find a place.

Unless you have super nice furniture then it's probably not worth transporting unless you can get a backload discount - if there is still more people coming to Perth then you might be able to find an empty load going back.

Go with as little as possible and buy from the Gumtree when you get there.

Not many transport companies are interested in going from east to west. All my belongings got ruined as I didn't insure for negligent damage. On top of that it cost about $6000 for the pleasure. I basically gave away most of my belongings rather than go through it again on return trip.
Drive your car over with a trailer. It's good fun!

About a year ago, maybe more, we got a large shipment from Perth via a company that does backloads. It cost around $720. Not sure if that's helpful or not, but if you have stuff you absolutely have to bring, it could be the way to get it here.

Hey Dave

Can't really comment on the furniture side of things as I don't know how attached you are to items such as your bed or fridge ;):D but for a short term rental have you considered caravan/holiday parks? http://www.sydneyhillsholidaypark.com.au/6060/Home/

Then there's always the option of flat-sharing or granny flats- I hear there's plenty in particular suburbs :) that may suit. I'd also be checking out Gumtree and Domain to see what's around.

Keep the car- depending on where you work, how far you want to travel/socialize you may well need it. Just start saving up for our toll roads now though:D

Heed this WARNING !!!!! Sell everything, take the basics. You will save yourself a small fortune trying to move it.The cost of replacing the furniture you require would be minimal close to where you are moving.Just my thought for today..................

Come stay at one of my guesthouses in Sydney. We specialise in being a landing pad for new arrivals and charge share house prices. Week by week so no major decisions needed about length of stay and bond etc.
