rent is too damn high!

Right now on triple j radio there's a segment about the 'rental crisis'.

Most of the examples they gave were students with one example saying that $300 for a room in a share house. I dont know why students dont stay with parents and / or get part time jobs.

Talkback callers asked for the end of neg gearing to reduce investors buying and therefor make it more affordable to purchase. Another asked for an increase in rental assistance payments.

Radio announcer was an idiot saying darwin was winning because theyre at 7% vacancy.

Labor and liberal spokespeople were both on. Both argued with each other despite having the same message: ng not on radar; reduce incoming/outgoing transactional costs for both purchasing and renting; reduce redtape on developing.

Thoughts?

These shows always bring out the ignorant. Are single students really going to buy a home? I remember living on damn near no money at all when I was at undergrad uni.

triple j announcers are nothing but a bunch of whinging socialists who cant stand anyone with any more

a) authority
b) money
c) experience
d) education
e) worldly views
f) opinion
g) facts
h) argument

than they have. i think its a pre requsite for any HACK presenter to be an intellectual narcissist.

Yeah they certainly have some dumb stuff on the Hack segment. He was saying that its wrong that a developers job is to make money rather than provide housing for homeless people.

They're going on about this affordability crisis, but i didnt know there was one. Perhaps its different in other states?

Surely people with half a brain can afford to either rent or purchase, or dont put themselves in a position where they cant to begin with?

I have friends paying $500/week EACH for a room in the city. Average paying jobs. It's just what you do...

Even when work was paying my rent I tried to keep it low. Sheesh.

nhg, a quick look on gumtree sydney -> room uni -> Realestate -> Sydney Region lists the vast majority of rooms between $150 to $260.

Or must one live in the right postcode in the right street and house?

All triple j are doing is teaching/reinforcing entitlement - the rich, most who work their butts off need to do the right thing and spread their wealth around, thankyou very much .

AS is correct in his assessment.

I was being sarcastic. As for $150/week incl. bills. That's how much I was paying when I lived in the city 5 years ago, furnished room too. Granted the house flooded when it rained :p

Am looking at moving towards Enmore now, $500 between 2 seems to get you something pretty schmick, don't know what people are on and on about re: super high rents. I suppose everything seems expensive when you have no job *cough* uni students.

(I should add myself into this category, i'm burning through ridiculous amounts of cash on my building projects whilst being unemployed).

Lost respect for HACK long ago, not so much the show, just the morons who call up to voice their 'well thought out, researchedand succinctly presented dialogue'.

HACK is the biggest joke to come out of Federal funding, pink batts et al.

Triple J - which is an offshoot of the ABC - is therefore Socialist by nature.

I've listened to it off and on for many years (back when Helen and Mikey were on), and I always got sick of the lefty whining and moved to another station until I got sick of that one too, and so on. Then back to Triple J for another brief stint and off again.

I can't stand the commercial radio format anymore...always sprouting on how different they are from the rest, but all have exactly the same structure, all have those annoying rotating play lists and ad blocks, sponsored traffic segments and endless station plugs...and don't start me on the volume of ads. FFFFAAAARRRRCCCCKKKK.

They (Triple J) traditionally stack it with lefties and lefty Uni types on their way to Byron, catering to that demographic.

Therefore, being Socialist by nature and populated by that element who are also starting off in the world with little money and no property, are always gunna slag off the wealthy who have it and who should be sharing it around with those who don't.

You know; us capitalist pigs.

This just popped up on my facebook feed

OPERATION *******, our co-ordinated response to local housing crisis is UNDERWAY. As you read this, squats are being established. Thankyou to Anonymous for your work in organising and supporting this operation. If you need a place to live now or soon, drop a message to this page with your phone number. Free rent. It's that easy.
Practically nobody lives in affordable housing. It wasn't always the case here. It's clear that the investors, governments and corporations are spiralling out of control towards an ever increasing profit goal that has already FAR exceeded what we can afford.

We have reached our collective peak when it comes to accepting half-baked solutions and positive spin. People can't afford to live. This will not change without occupation. If the welfare institutions or social network within our country were going to fix this, they would have done it already.

Initially, Operation ******* will focus on disrupting viability for investors to "occupy" empty space, as well as providing support for the dispossessed. Our community is in housing peril. We don't want to see our great people leave! We see any threat to any person within our community as a threat to all. We must be allowed to own or rent land within our means, we must be allwed a safety net, we must be allowed to build our own houses. The industries that will be affected only survive through holding us all down.

There are some real idiots in the world.....

I met a guy who followed that philosophy in the 70's. His mates grouped together and camped on the side of a mountain. Screw industry and greedy capitalists.

He regrets it to this day. A couple of his mates purchased the land and retired decades ago (there is a sub-story there where I'm pretty sure they were growing pot in the mountains).

I can just imagine the screams if we were to put the rent up to a point where neg geared properties broke even. Its effectively a government rent subsidy.

Thankfully neither of the party members indicated it was even on the table.
