Terrorist attack

Listened to this idiot on the TV this morning . And gee , the Americans have such a great record of getting hostages out alive .

Made me annoyed . Just getting there so he can get his face on TV and generate publicity for himself . If the authorities had followed his advice we would have just generated more publicity for the gunman and encourage others to follow his lead .

As I said early I think they handled the situation well.

Luckily we live in a free and democratic country where people can agree to disagree . One of the sad things is that the freedoms we tale for granted are allowing radicals to spread their message of hate . That's why I feel the less publicity that is generated , the better .

I would prefer he went to his grave unnamed and unknown , but that's not the way we work .

'Head of Global Studies at RMIT University, Joe Siracusa,'

cmon give me a frikkin break, head of global studies!!!!!!!

since when does the head of global studies become an expert on siege negotiation and terrorisim procedures

Maybe we're so used to our politicians on both sides openly lying, we can't handle anyone who tells the truth. From my observations " he nails it ". And the big takeaway hopefully for everybody is "This IS the wake up call" . But, hey, it's a free country ... By all means feel free to leave your head in the sand. LL

he may be right or wrong,

I simply do not take advice or bother with an opinion of a self proclaimed expert over someone who has no expertise

everyone is entitled to their opinion and Irespect it,

if my brother who flips burgers for a living, told me how to do brain surgery, do you think id take any notice of him, whether what he was saying was true or not?

ps and yes I am so used to politicians lying that I simply ignore them now

We don't have 'sleeping gas' that would just put 'em all to sleep ? Feed it through the aircon ?? Just an idea. LL

That was tried in Russia years ago. Lots of hostages died. Different metabolisms etc, probably make it unreliable. There's probably a reason why anaesthesiology is a specialist medical profession.

I imagine if he's taking pizza deliveries, interacting nicely they thought he could be talked out. There's no info (as far as I know) on how it escalated into shots being fired.

The link I posted says it escalated when the 34 y/o cafe manager attempted to get the gun. Brave bloke. Respect !! LL

Ah yes . He died a hero ...... You have to respect that he tried to make a difference , and , if he had expertise in the area , fair call , but he might have just got himself and someone else killed .

But again that's just speculation , because we don't know . Maybe the guy was about to shoot someone .....

It could have been poor judgement on his part. It is very difficult to tell. All I know is that if I was in that situation after 18 hours of being held hostage, I would be very likely to exercise poor judgement.

Was he a citizen? He was granted asylum but with a criminal history like his, unless he's a citizen, why was he not deported a long time ago? At the very least he had enough of a rap sheet that I wonder how he wasn't behind bars.

How is he a hero? We don't know what happened.

He attempted to disarm a bad guy and so we lionise him on facebook.

Alternate viewpoint is that he he tried to disarm the criminal in a manner that dictated a hasty, unplanned resolution. Who knows what the experts had underway to resolve this?

Cost his life, an innocent woman's life and put many more lives at risk. Injured other people too.

This wasn't a plane heading into a building. But maybe things were escalating and he took the right decision.

The thing is that we don't know. But we are all experts who know how this should have been handled because we read the Telegraph and Facebook.

We don't know yet.

+1 This^^ Its a really delicate situation. I guess if he did successfully disarm the gunmen he's a hero?

Good chance you reckon ? ... Or maybe this is one reason why the op manual on these matters seems to say "quick and decisive" is the preferred procedure. Otherwise people (aka hostages) do tend to take matters into their own hands. Who can blame them ? Cabin fever is real. The victims had been detained from 9.45am to 2am next morning at that stage. They get 12 out 10 for patience from me. I'm sure my " If it is to be it's up to me " gene would have kicked in well before that. LL
