Horrendous... this evil must be stopped. I feel for the people of Pakistan confronting this horror right now.

No wonder they are desperate to get here by any means possible and then we either turn them away, lock them up and in some cases send them back to what is quite possibly a death sentence.

Abbott has been incompetent since the day he was elected, this is just another example.

The guy has the most dangerous mouth l have ever seen. lt's quite bloody amazing even our stupid media don't pick up on that. One day he basically told the whole country including any nutcase that happened to be watching, how , word for word, to do something like this and how easy it is, l'm not repeating it here.
As for media, won't name the moron but 7's morning show, one minute his going on about how they will only show certain things , next minute they run a 3 minute gruesome flashback of all the things terrorist have put out over social media, Un Ukg believable , which was all basically over every channel for 2 days anyway , all pretending to be sensitive to what they can put out. Totally , mind boggling !

Not a minor question .... Given ALL the form this guy had , how did he ever get possession of a firearm ? ...... Clearly more incompetence ! LL

With all the shootings that happen in Sydney and criminals access to firearms, probably not too hard for him?

Firearms are not illegal in Australia, just 'restrictive'.

Sadly I was reading a US post which said Australians are now lamenting the fact they have tightened gun laws and want them reviewed after this Sydney Siege.

Remember things all changed after Port Arthur

You know , l could only imagine how impossible on so many fronts it would be trying to handle a situation like that for police and anyone else involved. And l'm not for a second saying they shoulda or coulda but !

Why wouldn't they have a couple of specialists perched somewhere , wait for the moment, one or two clean shots and it's all over. They wouldn't even need to be close .
l dunno if people realize how accurate they can be. My dad and his mate use to pick of bottle tops from 500mtrs away.
lt's just they had 100's of opportunities as this guy walked around in there , you saw him in every clip.

l realize this would be trickie on other fronts like needing to know what he has going on first. But just sayin , once they were as sure as they could be, why not just pick him off ?

No Australians I know have said this. Imagine the sort of weapons he could have got hold of if our laws weren't like they are. He would have walked into a store and bought something a bit more effective than a shotgun.

The offender should never have been let out on bail.

We have the changes made to the NSW Bail Act by O'Farrell for the current mess re dangerous people not being denied bail on a far more regular basis than before. The expense of having people locked-up while awaiting trial is costly (so too is providing funding for better mental health care) and it's always better to save buck... apparently.

Also, as someone with a close relative employed by the NSW Police for almost 30 years, it will be very interesting to see the outcome of the investigation into the incident - won't be at all surprised if it is revealed that big mistakes were made by the decisions of senior police. Time will tell.

You can feel all you like, but "good luck" ! This is more Muslim sect vs another Muslim sect conflict. Like Syria. Like Iraq. You got no chance of stopping "this evil" as long as Islam and their Koran and their Sharia law exist on the planet. Not a hope in hell. Best you can do is maybe try and save Oz...but Islam already has a beach-head here. Just hasn't reached critical mass yet ( as they have in several European countries ) which is ca 5% of the population. LL

I would think that the sniper/snipers would of been concerned about what was in the Backpack the Fruitcake had on.

Predominantly, Australia's humanitarian and refugee intake in the past five years have come from:

Afghanistan
Iraq
Stateless
Pakistan
Sri Lanka

Yes, ridiculously, it includes people who literally came from no organised societies - "stateless"!

Looking at these migrant source countries, rhetorically, do you think it would affect Australia? Perhaps, not a concern to the average person but the government should assess carefully. Not least what these people would do or not do in Australia.

Case in point, the hostage taker, Man Haron Monis:

"an Iranian cleric...
granted political asylum in Australia in 2001"

subsequently,

"was on bail for a string of violent offences, including being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife.

He was also facing more than 50 sexual and indecent assault charges and had a conviction for sending abusive letters to families of deceased Australian soldiers."

Now the issue every concerned analyst seems to be asking is why is such a person allowed to walk around freely in society.

The paradox: to be given freedom and benefits when entering Australia and to be examined closely for detention for the safety of society at large! Prevention is better than cure comes to mind!

What would be wrong with introducing a law that states any asylum seeker who repeatedly breaks the laws of the country who has granted them asylum, will be automatically deported back to the country from which they have fled?
I'm sure there will be arguments for why this could not happen and I would genuinely like to hear people's opinions on this.

He didn't need to be on a Centrelink pension. He allegedly embezzled $200,000 - a huge sum of money in 1996 Iran - before coming to Australia. The Iranian Chief of Police has said they sought his extradition but Australia refused.

According to the ABC, members of the Aussie Iranian community reported him to the Federal Police as early as 2008. They considered him to be a dodgy, unbalanced outcast. But he was not on the AFP/ASIO watchlist! How incompetent can our public servants be?! With low IQ public servants like these on our side, we don't need enemies. Obviously, recruitment standards need to be lifted.

More worrying is the revelation that some of the bullet injuries suffered by the surviving hostages were inflicted by our finest boys in blue. The hostage taker had a shotgun. The only victim who succumbed to shotgun injuries was the "hero" who tried to overpower the nutcase, hostage taker. So far no news on what injuries the fatally injured mother-of-three suffered. The autopsy will reveal soon enough if it was due to shotgun pellets or keystone cops slugs.

Unbalanced as he was, his demands were pretty moderate. He wanted a flag and the pleasure of a few minutes on the phone with Tony Abbott. The first part was easy to do and may have placated his messed-up mind.

If we don't want history repeating itself, a lot needs to be learnt from this incident.

Nothing! But too late, unfortunately.
Quite possibly he gained passage to Australia illegally and pleaded for political refugee status, which sadly, was granted.
Hopefully an overhaul of our security services (ASIO, Federal Police) will enable a more rigorous screening process so events like this don't occur again.

But it all might be too late.

As the population grows, whether by birth or immigration, more prisons need to be built.

..I include Canada as well.
We need more prisons too.

Also deport...1 major offence, you're out.
2 minor offences, your out.
If the offender is a minor...the whole immediate family is deported.

Sorry, I'm not a bleeding heart liberal....

"Tony Abbott has refused to link Sydney hostage taker Man Haron Monis with Islam, pointing out: ?We don?t blame the pope for the IRA and we don?t blame the Catholics living next door for the folly and madness of some people who may claim Christian motivations.?

Love it.

My mate knew of the guy, he was a random who worked at a carpet shop for some time. Also met the old boss and owner of the major law firm who the 38 year old lady worked for last night, he was devastated.

Few personal thoughts:
- he was a SELF PROCLAIMED cleric, don't know why they keep bringing this up, he could have SELF PROCLAIMED himself to be the prime minister or the cookie monster;
- if it's the guy my mate knew of, he was granted asylum after chaining himself to a fence or tree in front of parliament house;
- there is a cry to deport these guys, deport them to where, we shouldn't see ourselves as a sanctuary, crazy here is crazy there, they should be given the treatment required;
- treatment not being thrown in gaol, this has been proven again and again to do nothing but reinforce or propagate violence in most cases and the whole system should be one of rehabilitation.

How do we know that we are letting in good Muslims and not the nutjobs? I really don't know if anyone could work it out. Pretty easy for a fully radical nutter to pretend he was moderate?

See ya's.

How pray tell could this piece of garbage have been rehabilitated? Stop with the Do-Gooder sentiment. It simply doesn't wash!

Outside the fact that he may have had explosives on him triggered by his heart stopping/finger releasing, a sniper shot really would not have been ideal.

A bullet hitting glass will shatter not just the glass, but the bullet as well. Plus that building used to be a bank, so most likely still had the original 18mm plate glass. So either no bullet penetration, or it sprays shrapnel all over innocents. There is a video on youtube in America where a sniper bullet fails to penetrate the glass, and the gunmen then goes on a rampage... Negotiations and peaceful outcomes are their main objective, not gun fights.

As mentioned, no point speculating and talking about how it could have been handled better. All people involved had years of experience as riflemen/trg/negotiators etc.
