Gaza: Third deadly attack on UN school kills 10, called 'a criminal act' by UN

Rafah: A third attack on a United Nations school in Gaza has killed 10 people and wounded at least 40 in an attack UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described as a "moral outrage and a criminal act".

The United States also issued a rare condemnation of Israel over the missile strike in Rafah in Gaza's south, with the state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki saying the US was "appalled" by the "disgraceful" shelling outside an UNRWA school.

Blood stained the pavement both inside the school grounds and immediately outside the gate, where young Palestinians had been lining up to buy lollies and water from a cart on the footpath when they were hit with shrapnel from the blast.

Fairfax Media arrived not long after the attack, as the school's residents were trying to wash the blood from the concrete while others waited in agony to find out which of the injured had survived.

Mr Ban called for those responsible for the "gross violation of international humanitarian law" to be held accountable, as the civilian toll of Israel's weeks-long military operation in Gaza continued to mount.

Since the humanitarian ceasefire collapsed just hours after it began on Friday morning, Israel has waged a campaign of heavy shelling and air strikes on the southern Gaza cities of Rafah and Khan Younis, he said.

Describing the "appalling escalation and loss of hundreds of Palestinian civilian lives" since the ceasefire was breached on August 1, he said the resurgence in fighting had only "exacerbated the man-made humanitarian and health crisis wreaking havoc in Gaza. This madness must stop."

"It is simply intolerable that another school has come under fire while designated to provide shelter for civilians fleeing the hostilities," Robert Serry, the United Nations Middle East Special Co-ordinator, told Reuters.

Sheltering more than 3000 Palestinians displaced by the fighting, Israel was told of the co-ordinates of the school 33 times, the last time just one hour before the deadly strike, the UN said.

Guess what? The coastal strip off Gaza is rich in oil and gas.

Yup, Palestinian oil and gas is no secret in the energy field. It's just a secret to everyone else.

Do you honestly believe that?

I cannot imagine Israel targeting civilians.
Come on.. they do this all the time... you?re being a bit naive here.
They get plenty of warnings where humanitarian areas are.. then they bomb them on purpose. There are no "rockets" in these areas. They did the same thing in the Lebanon bombings. Again and again and again.. it?s no "accident".

All the info I hear is that they are targeting known Hamas rocket launch sites and strongholds - which are located in schools and Churches etc, or near them - intentionally to have a "human shield".

This is what I hear and understand also.

It's not the first war where civilians are killed in the line of fire, but to place them in that line of fire (as Hamas) is doing is the horrible reality.
