USA Property

Has anyone here invested in the USA?

Was interested to know where I can find information on the legalities, tax, how to go about it, the potential pitfalls etc...

With the US dollar still weakening and the exchange rate good and a depressed USA housing market I was interested in looking into this as a possibility.

Any good links, books etc... would be appreciated.

The trouble is that's a very old thread. A lot of things have changed- the sub prime stuff is still happening.

I don't know anything of what IS happening on the ground- howe ver you may want much moire recent information than what is provided in that thread.

I'd just ask myself whether it's worth having to learn all the different rules. If I was interested in the US property market, it might make more sense to buy, say, shares in US builders.

I am currently sitting on the Airporter Bus on the way to San Francisco Airport to fly home for good after being here for two and a half years, but have done no investing here.

The problem with investing here if you are going to buy individual family properties is the network of Property Managers is very ordinary at best.

Most of them focus on apartment buildings, so you may have problems with that.

The outgoings are different to Aus - they have property taxes at around 1.5% of the property price every year, and don't forget; you can't claim any losses against your Aus income I believe.
