Vast new cities of apartments and shops are being built across China at a rate of ten a year, but they remain almost completely uninhabited ghost towns.

China is awash with cash.

There's no place for the money to go except to build white elephants.

This is the very large downside to having an undemocratic government. When you're not answerable to the people all kinds of waste gets let through without a murmur. Meanwhile huge swathes of the population subsist in abject dickensian poverty below the bread line. The ability to build a new airport or city at short notice may seem admirable but only if it's actually a good idea in the first place.

One day this sort of thing will mean the whole house of cards will come crashing down - the only question is when? Could be tomorrow or it could take decades.
