where would you go if you could go anywhere?

Hi

Both my partner and I are originally from England.

My partner has been trying to convince me to go back for a holiday. I am very much against the idea as I'm very happy here and I don't want to go back :(

As a compromise she has said if we go back for 2 weeks we can add a week to the holiday to go where ever I want to go.

Now that sounds great but now the door is open to the sweet shop with no restrictions, so the question is, where would you go if you could go anywhere?

I'd say somewhere is SE Asia.

It's cheap, it's lovely, and it'll be a good half way stopover to break up your trip.

I like Thailand and Hong Kong (not so cheap but exciting). Depends on what you're after, shopping, beaches, culture, etc?

I have always wanted to visit Turkey. Everyone I speak to that has been there only tells me things that make me want to go more!

Cheers,

And everything you eat there makes you want to go more.

But Cheeks, it depends on what things you like. Do you like beaches? Culture? Food? Investment Property?

Work out what you want out of a holiday first, and then work out where.

italy/sth france - but would need more than a week for that ... try around 6 months in a villa.

or else back to south africa and do a proper animal safari intead of the one-day job. even one day was mind-blowing.

Actually I'm going to change my mind. Italy and Turkey. Italy I love and I've also heard nothing but rave reviews on Turkey.

Didn't want to make the trip a beach holiday, really wanted to do something a little different.

As you can imagine coming from England I've been to a lot of places in Europe, the Greek islands being my favorate place on earth, same there isn't much call for non Greek speaking engineers that specialist in railways on the islands

Actually had thought about making it a trip to look at some OS investment properties but I'm not sure how my OH will take to that. From what I've heard the US is where everyone is at a the moment, guess I could try somewhere in Greece, as we are not going until Oct 2006 it should give me enough time to find some contacts and sus things out. Not sure though.

SA would be good for the safari.

For me it would be Bronte Beach in Sydney, sipping on a cappacino at 8:00am watching the surf. Life in the P.R.C is good but nothing compares to being home. Bring on Xmas home leave.....

The great barrier reef!

I haven't seen it yet even though I have live in Australia for 10 years.

It's funny how people tend to assume you have to go to the other side of the world to enjoy a great holiday :)

I was like that too when I live on the other side of the world :D

Now I'm getting to appreciate what a great country I live in.

Cheers,

October's a good time for Japan & China - at least the more southern parts. I've been to China twice around that time, and Japan once, and overall the weather and temperatures were pretty good. Both have some great things to see and experience, and the fall colours can look good in late October.

China's cheaper, but I think Japan is easier to get around. For two weeks, do what my wife and I are doing next April (in Japan): get a 2-week rail pass and hit the trains (you did say you're a railway engineer ;)). The passes are not real cheap (and neither's much else), but the trains are even more expensive if you use them a lot, and they're very good. Thanks to the bullet train, you can base yourself somewhere central (like Osaka or Kyoto) and then do day trips to many of the main tourist places. All the info you need is in the Lonely Planet guide and on the Internet.

Cheers,
GP

This is a bit out there...

I have always had a fascination with space and the universe so i would have to say anywhere in outer space - the whole 0 gravity thing and looking down on the world is my ultimate. And for the low price of a mere US$20M i could do it.

At prices that low there's no excuse not to take the family as well.

The problem with going to space (other than the money) is that I'm left with a space suit that I can never wear.

Imagine walking around Karratha in a giant suit designed to keep you warm

Good why to lose weight though.

However, I could buy second hand Russian space suits and market them as weight loss suits :D

Last year I had the opportunity to do a lot of travel through both Western and Eastern Europe.

My top picks would have to be:
Russia
Slovenia, and
Turkey.
We spent three days in Athens at the end of our Turkey trip and it was two and a half days too long.

In Russia we did a Beetroot tour which included four days in Moscow then an overnight train to St Petersberg for another four days. It wasn't a tour where you are packed on to a bus and driven everywhere. The guide picks you up fom the airport and takes you to the hotel, then each morning they take you for a walking tour around the city for a couple of hours and then leave you to explore on your own. You will have to pick the time of year carefully as we went in Late November at it was bitterly cold. You could always get a bus down to Latvia and Estonia as these are close by and beautiful cities.

Cheers,
Nick
