Any advice for a Queenslander moving to Canberra, other than rush out and buy some warm clothes?
...and thermal undies
...and an electric blanket
...and a heater
...and a hot water bottle
...and an electric jug (to boil the water to pour on the windscreen to get rid of the ice in winter)
...and a car with an instant heater
...and lots of face, skin cream and lip balm to combat the dry air (there's no humidity down there to do it for you)
...and a higher grade hair conditioner (hair dries out faster in dryer air)
...and boots and ugh boots (hope you don't suffer from chillblains)

...and GeoffW would be sorely disappointed if you didn't drop by his Subway @ Belconnen and say hi!:D

PS...beats me why any Qlder would willingly move to Canberra...I just couldn't cope with all that cold, dry, and skin aging air!

Hello Sailor,
People move around all the time.
I personally know of 2 Qlders who moved to Canberra
but I don't know if they moved there for work or if they liked the place.
Some people prefer colder weather.
My wife for example likes colder and dryer air and has her eyes on Tassie for retirement,
She says, if it's cold you just put some clothes on.
I have to admit, the air feels so much freshier in colder climates
but I personally prefer dry warm air.:D
Humidity by the way is bad for you, clothes get sticky.....
Cheers

Absolutely!

Rental accomodation is very short in Canberra. For anything to do with buying or renting in Canberra, by far and away the best website is allhomes

Hey, I have all of these living in Wellington and I'm not gonna need them any more. Yipee. I can bring them over with me! LOL

Cheers, QB

heh... it's not that cold... been like 2-3 years since it snowed up here in Gunghalin :p

I'm a country QLDer who moved to Canberra (via a few countries)... just get a relatively modern house (ie. the REA doesn't say... "Insulation? What insulation???") and enjoy central heating.

As for advice.... avoid Charnwood

oh... and the fireworks, porn and other important shopping needs can be found in Fyshwick and Mitchell.

Only advice I can offer, if its not too late, is DON'T DO IT!!

My wife moved from QLD to the ACT and lasted less than a few years before it almost killed her and she escaped North again but only as far as Sydney.

I can't speak from personal experience, but my wife would certainly argue the case against moving more strongly than I can. But if you're committed, just be prepared for it. The shock will be enormous and its best to go in with your eyes open. Everything the others have said above and then some.

But hey, what do I know, I've never lived there... :D

Cheers,
Michael.

advice for a Queenslander moving to Canberra ...

What are your interests ? Canberra clearly doesn't have the infrastructure of a lot of the major cities but has others such as ...

160kms of cycle ways (if you are into cycling)
many mountain biking tracks
many good restaurants
some good live music venues however Sydney attracts better acts
good skiing only 2 hours away (perisher, blue cow, threadbo)
good roads (many roundabouts)
many bushwalking tracks
lakes for sailing
rivers and lakes for trout fishing (however water levels are low)

The younger folk don't tend to rate Canberra as a place to 'go out, get drunk and fall down' because it doesn't have as many pubs and nightclubs as Sydney or Melbourne

Hi there
having lived in Canberra and studied at the ANU - can say it is a good place to get an education - the population is highly literate and politics is bread n butter.
There are lots of public buildings to visit and the walking and bike tracks are excellent.
Yes it does get cold and does get hot - but that is why you have central heating and airconditioning.
It does tend to be a place that you need to join up with others at a club - and there are certainly lots of those around.
I prefer the suburbs around Weston Creek and Woden - as that is fairly central and you can get from one side of Canberra or to the other fairly easily.
Good luck with it all.
thanks

My tips: If parliament is sitting book your accomodation early because it can be literally impossible to get a hotel in sitting weeks (or a taxi for that matter).

If your planning on renting: start looking now, very tight rental market here, I have read reports in the paper of 30+ groups attending open homes

Make sure they've got high-paying jobs; as others have said rents are high.

Suburbs are spread out and public transport is terrible so if they have kids, be prepared to ferry them everywhere.

But I must admit it's a novelty to see peaks of snow from your loungeroom window at this time of year (many houses and flats have views).

My advice would be to make the most of it while you're there - be if for 6 months or 60 years.

In Canberra you'll have access to all the facilities enjoyed by a multi-million pop city, but with little of the inconveniences.

Yeah, the public transport might be crummy, but so what. People drive everywhere and get parks at 99% of places 99% of the time.

Like books? - go to the National Library of Australia.

Like science? - go to Questacon.

Like Australian history? - go to the War Memorial (stunning!), and Old Parliament House (equally stunning!).

The academic type? - ANU and the University of Canberra are right there.

Like skiing? - You're only 2.5 hours north of the Snowy Mountains ski fields.

Melbourne is a day's drive away, Sydney <3 hours, Batemans Bay <3 hrs.

For a city supposedly in the middle of nowhere, Canberra really is in the middle of everything.

The autumns are stunning, the summers are dry, the springs are full of flowers (Floriade), and the winters are not as nasty as, say, Armidale.

When I was there I lived northside (Belconnen, Bruce, O'Connor and Watson). I never took to Woden Valey or Tuggeranong, but that's all individual preference.

Well I've just had to pour boiling water over the car windows this morning so I could see where I was driving, it's absolutely freeeezing cold here 3 deg I think. The fire is roaring, but I've got my ski jacket on, and my house is insulated. It's just sooooo cold. And I'm only in Wellington, I'm pretty sure Canberra gets colder. So good luck. I'm so over the cold, and the frost, yuck. Frost this morning too.

QB

As someone who moved from the NT this year I can tell you that it is COLD!!

It started off nice and warm, but it is now only June and I have never been this cold on such a regular basis, not even when I was living on the mornington peninsula.

Apart from that it is a great place to be.

BR

You'll get back out of it what you put into it.
All I can say is I am glad I moved to Canberra back in 1990 because it was the perfect platform for the evolution of my wealth creation strategy. So good that it helped me escape from there last year and afforded me over the years to buy four nice properties in Sydney less than 10ks from the CBD, plus I got to keep all the properties I collected in the ACT over that period. Canberra has been a great place to invest in realestate. I now live in a quiet suburb at the upper end of Middle harbour. I love Sydney. It Rocks!
Cheers

Hi Kit,

Im from Canberra. Its a great place for someone with a family for the following reasons:
- No crime
- Driving and parking are stress free experiences
- Lots of parks and open areas
- Excellent schools
- You can travel to the two furthest points in canberra in 30 mins

On the negative side it can be a dull if youre single/DINK, its ok for a few years but not as much to do as Mel and Syd. As you may have gathered it is very cold, ive currently typing this with 3 layers of clothes and a blanket around me :).

Best places to live: anywhere inner north and inner south (look up allhomes.com.au to see which suburbs), manuka in the inner north is the cafe and cultural hub, and dickson is the place for good restaurants. However rent is very high in canberra atm. Another option is Belconnen, Woden and Weston Creek areas, still close to city but not as exy. I would avoid Tuggeranong and Gungahlin area if you work in the city as the commute is a bit longer than the other aforementioned areas, also as someone previously mentioned avoid Charnwood in Belconnen - lots of govy housing and crime.

Regarding work, i think Canberra has higher avg wages than most cities. I know for sure that in IT the wages are much better than in Brissy. Hope that helps.
