When you see warning signs around the place that promise the death penalty for trafficking drugs, in a Country you are visiting; it's probably a very good idea not to do it.

Blame the AFP, or the Bali Gubb as much as you like....

These two guys - were already experienced traffickers, and took a huuuuge risk.

Can we please stop wringing our hands, and can we (the media) please stop glorifying their struggle.

Heinous crime ?? phfft .. the only heinous crime was committed by Indonesia.

Anyone else find it odd how society has been conditioned to accept some drugs as "heinous and terrible" and others as socially acceptable ?? Even when the stats say otherwise ? One of the guys executed was for Marihuana !! FFS something seriously wrong with Indonesia. Stay away folks, dont risk yourself or your family,

Exactly if you don't want to obey the rules stay away, as some people found out the hard way. Why should selfish greedy individual think they are above the law. If you respect other countries culture and laws you should be fine.

Should be.. but not in Indonesia.. they have shown they are willing to execute people without due process or evidence beyond reasonable doubt, so even travelers with no drug involvement are at risk. Do not go there.

Just on the subject of MJ; many folks see it as no big deal. Maybe true.

My BIL was a sensitive, gentle man.

Got introduced to MJ at some point, and within a few months became paranoid, schizophrenic...started thinking he was being followed, became scattered and irrational, and generally deteriorated in health and mind.

He met a girl (also a tweeker) they fell in love....cut a long story short; they committed suicide together.

You could argue the MJ was not the cause, and you could argue that various other drugs are no worse (alcohol for eg) - both families (hers and ours) believe it was a major contributing factor in their frame of mind.

I know another friend who almost destroyed his life with MJ, but he got through it.

I often wonder how societies came to the conclusion that alcohol was ok, but MJ was not.

From my experience (and I have a drink) they are both very destructive.

Shapelle got away with it and they had plenty of evidence.
Other countries eg Malaysia, Singapore, China also have the death penalty.
Should we not go there either?

I think the message should be don't get involved with drugs at all and lock & strap your bags when you travel.

200 Ethiopian Christians were beheaded on the beach by terrorists and the story lasted for a day.

Girls and women are being tortured, raped and killed around the world and it barely raises a mention.

Indigenous communities are suffering in our very own country and few people want to know about it let alone fix it.

Why are we all so focused on two idiots who were making money on an illegal activity both in the country that they undertook the activity and our own?

For those who have stated their sympathy for those men, focus your attention and try to make a change on something that is more important.

For what it is worth, I assist specialists who go out to remote communities for a week a year to give medical attention to those who have no way of getting it normally.

Probably because it's easier than accepting the truth of all the other issues going on.

Chiliblue's comments are fair enough.

But when a neighbouring country murders people wholesale for such a thing as drug trafficking then this is a different ball game. Yes, you'd expect terrorists to commit atrocities, you expect that. It's medieval barbarism, backward, dumb.

It's like finding out a friend is into wife swapping. You might see some merit in it but many people look at it strangely and distance themselves lol.

No one was murdered datto.

Everyones aware that its illegal there and the potential penalty. Did it anyway. Didn't pay off. End of story really.

I am very anti what happend to the the bali 2

However i totally agree with. Why doesnt more innocnet people who get a raw deal get more coverage

I was particularly outraged by the "walk for jill day" or whatever it was called for that eoman who was murdered in brunswick a few years ago. Why her? What made her case so special.

Id be mighty annoyed if a female memebr of my family got killed shortly after that in a simialr manner and got a two line write up in the paper due to the hypocrisy

I rememebr they interviewed a woman who was in that protest balling her eyes out when they interviewed her about jill whom she had never met or had any connectiok with.

I doubt she would have given as much energy to another woman getting killed

The Indonesians fired projectiles into their tied bodies.. They were dead in 3 minutes. Their families are shattered. Murder in my eyes.

Yes. These guys have gone. But their families grieve every single day for the rest of their lives. The punishment is not for these guys really, but for their families.

They have written off 10 years of their life already and now this.

^^^^^^ yep. Indonesia will pay for these wholesale executions. Many other countries are repulsed and angered. This matter won't rest for a long time.

not really because it's a stupid argument. You would expect anything that is legal to kill more than something that is not. The argument can't persist because only an idiot would suggest a six pack of beer is more dangerous than a shot of heroin

10char....

Pretty much yesterdays news now. A bit of argy bargy on SS and it's all over

I reckon the long campaign against the death penalty still has plenty of life in it yet (see what I did there?).

The sanctity of life is fortunately still valuable for the majority of Australians - despite the vocal minority on here... as evidenced by the unity in our Parliament on this issue. There are no votes to be found in the other direction...

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-03/Phillip-ruddock-calls-for-abolition-of-death-penalty/6440762

It's only a matter of time for the remaining countries to find their humanity aka their better selves...

if you look at the poll results up the top, you'll find that it's not a vocal minority but a majority that thinks those two deserved to die.
