Ebay downlights

Atti

Recently I put downlights inside and outside of an IP. The lighting specialist advised that the downlights outside should be small with no spaces for insects etc.

The electrcian said what a good idea he had installed movable downlights inside his house and didn't move the lights but had to clean out the space around lights.

I would look for lights with less space between light and fitting.

Are they even legal?

I would check that out. I know that in Vic that a down light without a protective cover is no longer legal from a electricians point of view. All down lights need to have some sort of cover as they get hot.

My sparky told me that for my electricals to comply, I must install the other down lights that have covers. My partner is a builder and confirmed. Should be referenced in the 2008 BCA.

I would be real care ful if you are buying those down lights as I think that they may not even be legal. Any sparky who wants to continue being licensed, will most likely not install them. Also as you are probably aware, sparky must install them.

Worst case scenario, your house burns down and the insurance company doesn't cover you.

If by chance they are legal, my question is whats wrong with them, coz that is a crazy cheap price.

Those lights appear to be good value. The only thing that would put me off is the energy saving lamps because you cannot use a dimmer with them.

To comply with AS3000:2007 (the wiring rules) you have 2 choices: either purchase fire-proof enclosures for each downlight, or install each downlight 200mm clear of anything in the roof (ie. Insulation, the frame and the roof). The 200mm rule only applies to halogens though, for incandescents it is 50mm to the roof, 100mm to the frame and 50mm from insulation. However, energy saving lamps are neither incandescent nor halogen and therefore the rules are a bit ambiguous in this regard.

Whatever the case, purchasing the enclosures will save your electrician time (no need to do measurements up in the roof space) and therefore save you money, either that or ask him to install it 200mm clear of everything while not looking like ***** from below the roof and watch him roll his eyes. :D

Those particular downlights (11W GU-10) give quite a weak light compared to regular LV downlights, and the initial warmup time is very frustrating. It is recommended that you use approx double the amount of those, than the regular LV downlights.
