Experiences in roof conversion on top-floor apartment?

Dear all,

I own a top floor apartment (7 stories high) in Ryde Council area and am thinking of adding value to the property by extending upward to the roof top area from my apartment.

There is an article in the Saturday Herald discussing this option in houses and apartments. I believe you need to buy exclusive use to an area of the roof and write bylaw from your body corporate first then you need council approval.

Does anyone have any experience in these type of work? Do you really need to build an entire level to add value compare to perhaps just an outdoor covered BBQ area connected with an new staircase goes directly from your balcony? How much do you think is reasonable cost to purchase an exclusive use area on the roof for you?

thanks in advance,
Newbie:)

I'd start with getting the approval from the body corporate, particularly seeing whether they'll even consider the plan.

Then do the numbers: (expected improvement in value of property) - (cost to implement said plan) = (is it worth the effort?)
