How do telephones work? Are they standard worldwide?

Will a land line fax/telephone machine from any other country work in Australia, provided the power adapter is correct for Australia?
Are they standard worldwide?

No they are not standard worldwide.

Due to the slight differences in telecommunications equipment around the world, there is an approval and certification process for any device that is to be connected to the Australian telephone network.

It is illegal to connect any non-compliant device to the network (they can actually be detected - usually as a result of non-standard voltages).

Many devices manufactured outside of Australia may well already be certified - look for the relevant mark, as described here:

More information in general can be found on the ACMA website: http://www.acma.gov.au/

As well as Austel approval, different countries have different phone jack connectors. You may need an adaptor or to change the plug or cable on the equipment.
