Oooops! what have I done

The worst mistake I ever made was to rent one of our industrial units to a nice young man to use as a motor bike repair business, he had good references so I let him move in. Some weeks later I learnt I had 'bikies' on the property ... I was worried about evicting them until the local detectives contacted me and asked if they could use a device to spy on them, now I was really worried, so I leaked this info to the tenant and they left hurriedly and went on to rent another industrial unit a little further out of town.

This was several years ago, I can laugh about it now, but just goes to show you can never be too careful with your tenants.

Having bikies is like having an escort agency or massage parlour as a tenant. More than happy to use their own trades to perform maintenance and keep prying eyes away.

Wow, you committed a crime and are publicising it!

Hi

I am surprised the local detectives needed the landlords permission. Maybe the tactics the local detectives were using wasn't justified without the owners consent? Or is it normal practice for local detectives to require the landlords approval to spy on the tenants?

Regards,

and frighten the existing tenants, keep would-be tenants away and make your business and premises notorious.

And you saved them from the cops spying eyes.

Your protected!

Completely the opposite actually.

You've now compromised yourself.

The bikies have you over the barrel if they ever come back to them and dont do as they say.

I once had bikies renting one of my properties. The left when I put the IP up for sale....no, they don't like that.

No, he alerted the bikies that the cops were going to surveillance the property.
He snitched on the cops, not the bikies. So they left of their own accord.

That's how I read it anyway.

So how could the owner be held over a barrel from that?

Unless of course we are talking about some TV drama.

Because they know that you have committed a crime and can blackmail you accordingly.

Y'know, lest they accidentally drop to a police officer that they skedaddled out of that place quick because the friendly landlord let them know they might soon be facing unwanted scrutiny.

A whole lot of twaddle written about my message which was to point out you dont always know what you are getting i.e. undesirable tenants. :D

That's how I read it too..they left on their accord, however balwoges have left themselves over a barrel.. any time the bikies can come back and make demands and if those demand are not carried out that they use what happened earlier about the tip off against them.

Dont think it cant happen? I've seen this scenario happening as a regular occurrence in a forma working life.. its happens quite a lot across various sectors within the criminal element world. They're always looking for the upper hand to supremacy and control - it's how they survive.

To the rest of us, it's life but not as we know it.

He done the bikies a favour by telling them.

Is it illegal to snitch on the cops?

Even if it is, prove it. Don't admit to anything.

Do you think a bikie will go to court as police witness? Don't think so. No credibility.

Thanks Datto, you are indeed correct.

Seems some folks think bikies are going to stand alongside the police against a regular citizen just because they have them over some sort of barrel ??

The guy saved their arses!

This. They don't if they themselves have a warrant. If they have one, they can install surveillance with or without the LL's cooperation. If they don't have one it is illegal for either them or the LL or the two in cooperation to install a surveillance device.

If they had a warrant it would be most illegal for you to give the tenants a heads up. Since in fact the wallopers were themselves suggesting you perform an illegal act, I'd say there are no comebacks. OP dodged a bullet and good for him/her.
